Tutor - probably too challenging to use with lower than Adv as learners are likely to struggle to find suitable words to fit. The words can be really random, too! It gave me an opportunity throughout the lesson to notice tricky spellings, that we'd talked about at the start (silent letters/combinations like "gh" for /f/, etc) All students (15/15) said they would do it again and some said they'd tell their friends!
Students - "my daughter is doing this...now I know what she's doing". "We can learn new words" "I like it" "It was a fun lesson" One student was confused by the keyboard at the bottom - perhaps the least confident using tech.

Used with 8 Intermediate students...6 were already library members! One tried to join during the lesson (but her details were not being accepted - we couldn't work out why) and one was going to think about it (I think she wanted to do with her husband). They were all familiar with borrowing books; one had already used library computers, but the rest were surprised to find out the many facilities on offer. They were particularly surprised by the crafts available and that there were so many things for children. None had heard about the Library of Things and were interested in this.
They enjoyed searching the website together - I have a photo to share. They supported each other and it prompted good discussion. By supporting each other, they found all the info they wanted. It took about 30 minutes (also inc some extra discussion/vocab about genres of books).

I used 'Keyboard confidence' as the final part of a lesson which had already built confidence using 'Identifying Icons' and 'Device of the day' - it was really great getting learners up and gaining confidence not only using the smart board but also being in front of a group. It was really easy to combine these resources with ESOL teaching - e.g. colour and shape to describe the objects in device of the day!

I used this activity with a group of refugees. The idea was really to boost confidence and for them to bond as a group. It worked! Having them up and enjoying the SMART board technology produced lots of fun and they felt encouraged to try out using the board for mark making (for those who have no English). The fact that this embedded digital skills was a bonus and helped with the fact that the class is mixed in ability. The younger ladies were able to feel that they knew about the keys and functions (@ symbol and some punctuation marks for example) and we extended to use it as an opportunity to revise alphabet. uch a versatile string point for a lesson!

Gave to my E1-E3 Digital Skills learners. This was a great resource. I demonstrated first and asked for their input for the spreadsheet, then they followed verbal instructions, with support of the spreadsheet printed for them to copy the food items. I expanded the exercise by asking them to screenprint their shopping list into ms word and attaching the file to an email. This was simple and easy to follow. Caroline D

I used this with a group of refugees who have been in the UK for a very short time and who will be being resettled here - so there were many opportunities to embed aspects of life in the UK and society norms around shopping. We introduced some food items and then enjoyed looking at the logos...eliciting the names of the supermarkets and discussing which are familiar! A really fun way to introduce the 'reality' of what products look like rather than just the names of fruit and veg. Had to get everyone logged in to the wifi too!

One learner did not know how to do that, so in itself that was a good little mini lesson for her.

One learner wasn’t sure what she should put as the subject.

I was impressed with the e-mails I received as all learners had included all necessary information, where, when, what time. They also asked if I had any food allergies or restrictions (something we had covered in a previous class) They all used a greeting and signed off with their names.

What I love is how easy it is to not only mark and return work using this format, but also to share samples anonymously for correcting as a class. I will definitely use live emails for work again.
