One example of credibility that Douglass gives is the cruelty of slaves. In chapter two for example , he gives the slaves a monthly and yearly allowance. The monthly allowance was eight pounds of meat, one bushel of corn, two linen shirts, one pair of trousers, and one pair of stockings. There were no beds given to the slaves." (Douglas,6)

The reader can believe what Douglass is saying because he was once a slave. He shows the reader how cruel the slaves were treated. When slaves were given little amount of food and clothing they sang in happiness. Which showed their appreciation for what little they were given.

F. Douglass uses pathos throughout his writing to show strong feelings of empathy. For example in chapter one he tells the reader that, " A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood." (Douglass,1)

Even a simple freedom like knowledge was restricted to slaves. Douglass really touched this subject when he talks about the craving for knowledge and how he doesn't know his own name. the quote is pathos because of the sadness it causes the reader to feel, and how the reader can relate to Douglass.

The whole point of this book is to show people how wrong slavery is, from the eyes of a former slave. Douglass supports his cause by stating, " if the lineal descendants of ham are alone to be scriptural enslaved, it is certain that slavery at the south must soon become scriptural... who, like myself , owe their existence to white fathers.
' (Douglass, 3).

uses logical explanation to support his claim of slavery being wrong. This being just one reason, only justifies why mulatto children should not be held as slaves. He claims that if a child has a white father and a black mother he inst a direct decent of ham , there fore he shouldn't be a slave.
