Corre l’anno 1943. Nella Riviera del Ponente, tra le colline sanremesi, vive Pin, bambino orfano di madre e abbandonato dal padre. Privo di punti di riferimenti, il bambino vive con la sorella, la Nera di Carrugio Lungo, Pin è un ragazzino vivace e ribelle, cresciuto precocemente e che ama stare con i grandi, nella continua ricerca di un po’ di attenzione, e di qualche amico.
A causa di una scommessa lanciata dagli uomini dell’osteria, viene rinchiuso in prigione per aver rubato la pistola a un soldato tedesco, “cliente” della sorella. Prima della prigionia riesce però a nascondere la P38 in campagna, in un luogo segreto che solo lui conosce: il luogo dove i ragni fanno il nido.

Fa l'esempio della parola "avanguardista", che è estremamente difficile da tradurre in inglese perché carica di significati storici. Alla fine, in questo caso, la scelta è stata di mantenere la parola italiana "avanguardista" e poi mettere una nota a piede pagina per spiegarne il significato. Per quanto, spiega McLaughlin, per un traduttore inserire una nota equivale ad alzare una bandiera bianca, a una dichiarazione della resa. Ma sarebbe stato impossibile fare altrimenti.
