In my opinion he wasn't a true impressionist because if you compare his artwork to Monet there are quite a few differences which has my personal preference leaning more towards him being the true impressionist. He was the one who paved the way, I like the more abstract and serene artwork of Monet's. He doesn't focus as much on the subject, or the structure and the colour palette that is used. If I'm looking for a true impressionist's work - I want it to be somewhat similar to Monet. Degas definitely is talented, and he does emphasize the painting with lots of techniques. The way that Monet works with his light, I just favor it more. In comparison to Monet's Water Lillie's and Degas Dance Class, the one I feel that has a more impressionist feel would be Monet's. Degas paintings has a more Realistic feel to it.

- zoe yam.

I believe that Degas is a true Impressionist, because of the techniques of juxtaposition, sketchy line, cropping and showing the bourgeois modern life. Degas has been influenced by photography, which shows up in a lot of his paintings. This helped give a sense of in the moment (snapshot)

and movement throughout his paintings. An example of this "Dance Lesson", 1871 by Degas. Degas uses the use of natural light which is one of the main unique techniques of the impressionists. This is why I believe that Degas is a true Impressionist.
By Kate

I think that Degas is a true impressionist because of his focus on light. In his art work, for example in his painting, The star, he accurately depicts the changing aspects of the artificial light. His use of angles creating a snapshot effect so often seen in his work also mark him as a impressionist.

I think he is a true impressionist because of his modern subject matters, techniques of optical mixing and juxtapositions. For example, mid-class people and their modern lives were his focus. Additionally, his subjects are often off-centre. For instance, in his painting of The Star, the ballerina was not placed right in the middle, but rather being shifted rightwards, and the rock at far background was flattened as he did not lie to the viewers, but showed them whats on the surface

An example of this is the ballerina in the oil pastel work called the star. The juxtaposing with-oil pastels is shown on the ballerinas skirt. This makes him a true impressionist as it adds depth to his work and juxtaposing is a technique other impressionist such as monet have used. He uses juxtaposing to blend colours when they are next to each other.

I would call Degas an impressionist, although not a TRUE impressionist. I say this because, when comparing him to Monet, whose main focus was on how light showed objects, Degas does play on natural light sometimes, but he allows his interest in the subjects/objects, and their line and composition to be more pronounced. I think he calculates his compositions too much to be seen as a true impressionist, whose main objective, I believe, is to bring out the spontaneous feeling of wonder and sublime felt when experiencing the image, to the viewer of the painting through the painter’s spontaneity in making the piece. Monet never sketched out his forms (eg 'Japanese Bridge' series), or planned his compositions, and you can feel the freshness produced and image yourself there. Because of Degas’ interest in structure (eg in 'Dance Lesson'), I think it is harder for the viewer to feel the spontaneity of the image. Therefore I do not think Degas is a true impressionist. Anya
