A Reflection on "Connected but Alone"

Our elders often say that we, the post-millennials, are unsociable and secluded because of our use of gadgets; and that our noses stuck in a gadget, instead of a book. Like my father, he gets mad and irritated whenever he sees my brother and I in a room using our phones and barely talking to each other.

I believe on the “Goldilocks’s Effect” that Ms. Sherry Turkle mentioned. We prefer to have things in just the right amount. We want things in our control because we’re scared to commit mistakes while having a conversation in the “real time”. We are able to express our thoughts on the spot and aren’t able to edit or retouch how and what we are going to say to the person we are interacting with because we got used to the practice of modifying our words before we express them. Despite the possibility of making such mistakes, offending or hurting him/her, the perks of that happening is that we’re able to have a glimpse of that person’s character to further understand him/her and build up a good communication, thus relationship.

Furthermore, most of the post-millennials today focus their attention on their life in the virtual world. Sometimes they feel lost and empty whenever they’re away from their gadgets resulting to them feeling anxious and insecure. For instance, I have this friend that can’t live without her phone for a day. She even skipped class to go home and get her phone (that she forgot). I asked her why and she said that she feels awkward and bored without it. I got her point but other than this she kept relying on her phone for comfort and uses it as an escape for the time-being. It’s acceptable that we use these gadgets for entertainment, but it becomes a bad habit for us to use it to escape and avoid the real-life situations, instead of facing and solving them.
Sadly, there are some who are slaves of these devices, making us inseparable to gadgets, but at least there are some who know how to limit their usage. And I think that’s a great practice that everyone should be doing; having time-management. Moreover, we should be focusing on our relationship with the people around us and communicating with them to have that connection because that connection might be their only way of surviving and living in this world of ours. A simple talk can make one’s day, a joyful one. An interaction, may it be through social media or not, is a step to having that connection. We just have to remember that connections aren’t only made through a tiny device but are also through a face-to-face dealing for it to become real and felt.
