Flappers were women in the 1920's who lived a lifestyle that at the time was viewed as taboo and immoral. Flappers existed during what was called the "Jazz Age". Flappers were a symbol of liberation for women, as they became more independent and carefree. Things like women's suffrage and the fact that women began to get higher wages are what led to the rise of the flappers. Additionally, as the way women viewed themselves began to change, the outer appearance of mist women began to change as well. With the rise of flappers came fashion such as the iconic flapper dress-- which was deemed by many rebellious and inappropiate as it showed women's calves and collarbone and was 'provocative'. Another style that flappers were famous for was the 'bob', a very short hairstyle that was popularized during the "Jazz Age". The behaviors of women changed as well, as flappers began to do 'outrageous' things such as publicly smoking, drinking, and dancing in jazz clubs and speakeasies.

The 1920's began a time of advertisng nationwide and chain stores. Because of this, many Americans bought the same products, used the same slang terms, and listened to the same music. Because more people had money to spend, more consumer goods were purchased such as; clothes, cars, fridges, and arguably the most popular-- radios. It was because so many people listened to the radio that trends were spread more quickly as well as farther. Some fads of the 1920's were dances such as the Charleston, beauty pageants, and a trend called flagpole sitting.

Dancing was a monumental part of the 1920's. Dance marathons-- contests of endurance where singles or couples danced for hours-- became popular. Not to mention the many 'provocative' dances that became extremely notorious during this time. These dances included the Charleston, Fox Trot, and Harlem dancing such as the Lindy Hop, which was brought on by African American influence.

Harlem was a neighborhood in northern Manhattan, which due to over-development, landlords were desperate to fill them. Luckily, a period which was called "The Great Migration" brought many African Americans to Harlem. In a span of about just 10 years, Harlem had a huge African American population. Jazz music became highly popular in Harlem, popularizing the names of black jazz artists such as Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, and more. As black musicians began to get popular, so did other types of black artists such as actors, writers, singers, poets, and especially activists. People who got popular during this 'cultural boom' in Harlem were Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson, Josephine Baker, Aaron Douglas and much more. This age of cultural explosion in Harlem was also known as a 'golden age' in the culture of African Americans.
