The bee population is responsible for much of the pollination within the agricultural industry. However, this population is slowly being thinned out due to a recent disorder known as Colony Collapse Disorder. This has been killing off the general bee population, and many people do not understand the causation of the collapse.

Our documentary is a useful source, considering that the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is both a reliable and credible resource since this non-profit organization is used to provide information throughout the country. The context of this source contains personal experiences from beekeepers and other individuals that share how they have been affected by this growing issue. Also, in presenting solutions to solving and figuring out this problem, interviews from prominent individuals and clips from high-tech labs are included. This documentary ties in to the other sources since it encompasses the same worldwide issues. The source is credible because it incorporated facts and was produced in order to inform the viewer.

The National Pesticide Information Center is incredibly useful as an argument of ethos, coming from an unbiased institution about the proper use of pesticides. Objective sources are key, and thus provide reliable information. With the name and reputation of the source, it provides suddenly compelling arguments.

Source H provides exclusive emphasis on the role of large scale agribusiness in the solution rather than the problem. It is no secret that the bee killing pesticides these companies produce are a major cause of CCD, but although there are countless articles placing blame on them for this, source makes the point that they will have to be involved in saving bees as well. In order to save the bees, these large companies will have to participate by reducing, and eventually ending, their production of neonicotinoids.

The USDA is launching a program in attempt to save the country’s revenue and food supply Efforts to find the cause of this pandemic are nonstop; the suspected culprits are pesticides, shrinking habitats, viruses, poor nutrition/genetics, cell phone towers, and pesticide-resistant parasites which continue to kill off bees worldwide.

The Solution

Simply ban ultra-harmful pesticides! Recently, the European Union banned the use of Neonicotinoids, which are the most harmful pesticides to bees. So, why can't the United States do the same? It can definitely cut the rate of dying bees everywhere. Not only congress can make a change, however; farmers can use an integrated pest management (IPM) system for varroa control without the cost of living bees.
