The project became meticulous once the spreadsheets began asking for numerous amounts of information for energy usage computation. After the first day, i was able to think about more of the items i recycled and put more thought into what went into the trash. By the third day my excel sheet was showing me how much driving i was doing but i could not do anything about it since we were not supposed to change our daily routines yet. I think that maybe instead of going out to pick up food someone could cook at home instead. Carpooling is also another good tactic to use considering that automobile use is one of the highest BTU outputs. ( Corey )

I would say that the only difficult part of the project was the Excel spreadsheet. I spend most of my time outside of my house and don't usually use the kitchen, television, computer etc.. What was difficult to track was the amount of driving I had been doing. I daily commute to UTSA as well as work for my dad, which requires the use of my car.

For myself, one way that I could reduce my impact would be catching a ride with my dad in the mornings instead of driving my car to school. He offices right across the street from campus. Also, I have gotten better at taking shorter showers, making sure lights that aren't being used are turned off, and I've learned how to get better gas mileage in my car.

I was shocked by how many worlds it would take to sustain my lifestyle because I didn't think I lived to awfully. Keeping track was also very easy because I didn't tend to stray too far from my schedule this semester.

My biggest difficulty was definitely the Excel sheets as well. For everything else in this project I could go by generalities but for the Excel sheet I had to really think about how much I was using stuff down to the minutes. Which meant timing myself and actually remembering to when I was about to use something.

For me I had the same issues as everyone else. Working in Bourne guaranteed 40 miles a day at least and having switch to a less fuel efficient car this semester didn't help that. I got some of my other BTUs down but it paled into comparison to what my driving generated. It was very disheartening.

The recommendation I would give would be is to live somewhere between work and school. Like me for instance it would greatly be beneficial if I were to live in the upper i-10 area by Leon springs. But since I work and I go to school I wouldn't really be able to afford that area. And if you work and go to school here use public transportation as much as you can. You already pay for it in your tuition and it's going to be running it's route wether you are on it or not so by riding it you are instantly reducing co2 emissions.

I think for a lot of people driving habits could be changed. But for recommendations I think the small stuff like conserving water, taking shorter showers, or leaving faucets on could be simple ways to conserve energy. Plan meals to cook at home, because eating out waste energy for the production of food, and saves you money for gas. Or leave lights and fans off when you really don't need to be using them.

The beginning of the project was alarming considering the results generated from the personal ecological footprint calculator. Just commuting 30 miles to school/work per day and taking a shower requires a lot of energy when you follow the source. Throughout the project I became much more aware of my choices, including trash disposal/recycling, water & electricity usage, and transportation. This project exposed me of my energy consuming lifestyle and made me rethink my daily routine to better reduce my individual impact.

Like everyone else, tracking my daily routine became a burden. Keeping a log on the trash you generate, food you consume, and the energy needed for your lifestyle is quite the task. Over time, tracking my lifestyle became easier especially since most of us follow a routine and make the same choices which can be good and bad depending on the situation. My lifestyle did change overtime as I became more aware of my choices and realized their ultimate impact. I began recycling more and collecting recyclables in my car if I was not near a recycling bin. I also reduced my shower time, switched to more efficient light bulbs, and made more intelligent transportation choices to reduce my emissions.

Between the baseline reduction journal and the final reduction journal, there was a reduction in my ecological impact. I aim to reduce it more in the coming year while integrating better choices in my day to day routine.

This project (when taken seriously) can come as a wake up call for any individual. On average, an american citizen is very wasteful and ignorant of their choices and their ultimate impact. If you know someone who is willing to listen, analyze and make changes in their life, this project could be a great recommendation. My new lifestyle has sparked the attention of family members and co-workers and some have even adopted new (less impactful) choices in into their own lives. Change is contagious with the proper motivator. Be the motivator.
