‘Being’ something and ‘having’ something can be attributes to a person’s identity. Whether having or not having something expensive/precious is important to their identity or being/fitting a stereotype is part of their identity it can be argued that both ‘being’ and ‘having’ are closely intertwined.

Symbolic consumption is consuming products on which one relies on for not the utilitarian needs, but the social identity needs. It is related to the self through the need of an individual to achieve the modern idea of meaningfulness through what we consume.

Agree - that also means that people may believe that if they do not consume a particular product or they no longer consume/own something that they can no longer be the person that they were or that they were trying to be. There is a threat of "losing it" therefore losing that identity.

Walkers Crisps (Julia and Steph)

Walkers Crisps

Nostalgia - Staple British crisp brand, remembered as childhood crisps from snack parties or packed lunchboxes and enjoyed by adults in meal deals.

Experience: The experiences listed above are all associated with some sort of Walkers crisps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1VjcakNI8Q&ab_channel=WalkersCrisps

Versatile as a brand. The product can be used for snacks, meal deals, outings, and parties - it is suitable for all age groups and any events. The products they provide also have a wide range (e.g Monster Munch, Wotsits) - all flavors and shapes that consumers may be craving are provided by Walkers. Walkers also focus on alternatives like lower-fat crisps which can be seen in their Baked line.

With minimal changes over the years, the brand stayed the same therefore it was comforting and something everyone could rely on not changing. The only changes Walkers made were to their packaging, changing their colors to deeper shades representing quality.

As brand managers, we would: Introduce a continuation of the Walkers THROUGH THE YEARS campaign and add new flavors of the decades. By introducing new flavors as well as reintroducing the old flavors we could increase the popularity of Walkers in the media as crisp fans would be able to discuss and vote on which decade they would want to bring back.

Starbucks

Starbucks tends to associate themselves with serious and business minded people. Coffee alone symbolizes focus and energy, but Starbucks takes a spin on focus and says that their users are busy in a good way either academically or occupationally. Buying Starbucks makes people appear as busy and focused and as we know busy people are often successful. Starbucks is a place that you go to with an intent to get coffee and shows that you have intent in what you do. Ex. Mcdonalds consumers don’t go to Mcdonalds specifically for a coffee. (In a sense you have a focused mindset of what direction you need to take for your life/ goals)

This would affect our marketing strategy by advertising our users are successful through having intent. An example of commercial we would show is a user drinking Starbucks while slowly becoming more successful throughout their life. (School, Work, Life)
