My experience with Art Integration

Gave the opportunity for individual reflection on past experiences within the arts. Learnt about the importance of arts education and began discussing different perspectives on this, this led to my own personal reflection on times in which I have been subjected to arts integration as a child - cannot really remember a specific time ( I remember art being a separate activity we would do occasionally if we had the extra time - typically this would be visual arts (especially in primary school). The only other time I engaged with the arts was as an extra curricular- from Grades 4-7 I played the flute and went to band practice each week, with private lessons during the week, I also attended a band camp. I think that had these subjects been further encouraged there would've been higher participation levels and students would've been more engaged and entertained in these subjects. I feel I learnt a lot by having a different perspective and engaging in these activities on a weekly basis. By the time I reached high-school I had more of a selection with the type of art I engaged with (Dance, Drama, Music & Visual Art). At this point in time, I loved to dance and stuck with it through my high school career - with the rest falling to the back burner. Dance gave me such fantastic memories, and I often reflect on these times, many late practices, eisteddfods, and so many friendships formed and remain, dance was DEFINITELY one of the highlights of my high school career, and I am so glad that by the time I was graduating (2016) there was more of an awareness and focus on it in our school, giving so many more students these same opportunities and also allowing for the expansion of other arts areas in the school.
Overall, the arts were not integrated through my experience, but I would've loved for them to be - it would've created a more holistic experience.

This week's learning was eye-opening and allowed me as an educator to delve deeper into each aspect of the arts. At the end of this week, I had a more comprehensive understanding of Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Art. I also found it useful to learn about the different aspects of making engagement authentic within the arts; all of those aspects have had different impacts on me at different stages of my life.

This module really helps to introduce important knowledge surrounding the principles of Arts Integration. I felt that throughout this module I gained experience learning about how to be a learner, how different pedagogies impact learning and how to implement planning of integration into arts education. The activities throughout this module were engaging and I was left feeling like I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience through participating in these.

Teaching with, about, in and through the Arts

This module helped me to reflect on my practice and how I have already used some skills within the classroom, I was able to take a step back and see what skills and knowledge I already apply and what I still need to consider and be mindful of within my practice. I think that as a teacher who uses integration you need to be able to have a comprehensive understanding of any subject you are aiming to teach and integrate, without this, the chance of success is substantially lower. This module made me specifically think about my role as a critical and creative thinking who teacher with, about, in and through the Arts.

Within this model I found I learnt a lot about the planning and design aspect of the integration of the arts. I found that the activities provided gave me insight into the intricate details that come with planning for integration of subject areas in the classroom. Without this knowledge it would be hard to visualise this practice in action.
