October 31, 1846

On this day in 1846, the Donner Party could go no further. The group passed Truckee Lake (Donner Lake today) with about 8 inches of snow the night before. They were 3 miles from the summit when the snowfall was higher than the axles on their wagons. Some tried to go on further without wagons, but there was already so much snow that the road was no longer visible. They retreated back to the eastern side of Truckee Lake.

The height of the pedestal is 22 feet--the same height as the depth of the late October snow that trapped the Donner Party emigrants on their journey the winter of 1846-1847.
