During my internship, I have been given various opportunities to develop the competency of leadership. Krause (1997) states that leadership is controlling events, directing a course, and the ability to complete a job by using the skills and abilities. I was able to use my skills to carry out activities in PALS which lead me to achieving some of my goals.
In particular, I used my creative skills to lead two separate art activities.

When planning these activities there were a number of steps in which I needed to carry out in order to achieve success in leading the activity.
First I had to decide on an art activity that would be appropriate for the students at PALS preschool. Once the activity had been decided I then presented it to the class teacher to see if it would be possible to carry out this task. Once I got approval I ensured I had all the correct material organised for when this activity took place

As Speech and Language is practiced at PALS I thought it would be a good idea to incorporate that into my art activity.
The letter of the month was "T". All the children had an activity book based on this letter. Included in this booklet was the image of a turtle which gave me the idea to create a turtle for the piece of art work. As well as speech and language, this activity involved painting and sticking which would help the development of fine-motor skills.

Challenges that I faced while completing this task was the number of staff to students.
In the classroom there were six students and four staff to assist with this art activity. I found it difficult to ensure all six children were engaged. This particular class need a lot of help with fine-motor skills therefore when our attention was placed on four students two students were left to their own.
In reflection, I would construct the activity with two students at the one time with two members of staff. this would allow us to dedicate our full attention to all of the students while they are participating in the art activity.

After completing the activity I felt proud and confident that I would be able to conduct similar activities. I also believed that it showed the organisation that I could carry out roles that displayed the competency of leadership. I also enjoyed observing how the kids interacted in the activity.
