Blarney CastleConsistently ranked as one of the best places to visit in Ireland, you absolutely cannot miss Blarney Castle. Dating back to 1446, thousands of tourists make their way here each year to kiss the renowned Blarney Stone. Rumor has it if you climb the 10 stories to the top then hang upside down to kiss the stone you’ll be fortunate enough to get the gift of eloquence. Once you’ve kissed the stone and explored the castle be sure to take some time to admire the 60-acre floral garden.Blarney Castle in IrelandGIGASHOTS / shutterstock.com

The castle was opened to the public in 1960, and a tour around the castle shows off art, furniture, and tapestries from the 15th century. You can also take part in a traditional medieval feast, where you’ll be served all types of deliciousness like turkey legs, potato soup, goblets of mulled mead, and fresh bread by women in medieval gowns. It includes the highest mountains in Northern Ireland and the province of Ulster. The highest of these is Slieve Donard at 850 m. The Mournes is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has been proposed as the first national park in Northern Ireland.

Vernacular houses for most regions in Ireland were almost always single storey structures packed tightly into villages and lining the streets. A typical family dwelling would feature a thatched roof with a rectangular, narrow layout and just one room. The narrow plan was mainly due to the scarcity of timbers for roofing, with only timbers salvaged from the ocean and shoreline being the materials available. As such the roof spans were small, and held in place with ropes tied to pegs hammered into the walls or tied to heavy stones to protect residents from the fierce Irish elements.

Martello towers, sometimes known simply as Martellos, are small defensive forts that were built across the British Empire during the 19th century, from the time of the French Revolutionary Wars onwards. Most were coastal forts.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martello_tower
They stand up to 40 feet (12 m) high (with two floors) and typically had a garrison of one officer and 15–25 men. Their round structure and thick walls of solid masonry made them resistant to cannon fire, while their height made them an ideal platform for a single heavy artillery piece, mounted on the flat roof and able to traverse, and hence fire, over a complete 360° circle. A few towers had moats or other batteries and works attached for extra defence.

The Martello towers were used during the first half of the 19th century, but became obsolete with the introduction of powerful rifled artillery. Many have survived to the present day, often preserved as historic monuments.

In the second half of the 19th century, there was another spate of tower and fort building, during the premiership of Lord Palmerston. The Palmerston Forts are also circular in design and resemble Martello towers.
