This is a picture of a rhino that is made out of rubber soles of shoes. This complies with the reduce, reuse, recycle method which shows how the old soles of the shoes were reused into a toy rather than put into a dump which could potentially harm the environment and many animals that scavenge in the dumps. This relates to Apes because it shows how people were willing to conserve and save the environment by recycling the rubber soles rather than releasing them into the environment especially since rubber takes a long time to break down. This was a good use of materials to save the environment.

It doesn’t inform you what of it’s contents are GMO’s ,and only tells the consumer it’s a GMO product in tiny little print. This relates to APES because of our unit about GMOs ,and how many don’t include the fact that GMOs were used in the product to trick constumers into purchasing the product.

I’m this picture we see the end result of alot of evolution, and not all of it is natural. Bananas especially have gone through alot of human tampering and breeding. The current banana is seedless when It naturally has seeds, long and slim when it is usually short and fat. This relates alot to the last unit over biodiversity.

This is a water bottle made of glass and because of that, is reusable and safe unlike many of the disposable plastic water bottles that most people use. The average North American consumes 90 kg of plastics every year and this is drastically greater than the global average of 25 kg. Like we’ve covered in the sustainability unit in APES, the tragedy of the commons stems from each individual believing that their usage isn’t significant enough to affect the world. However, if everyone tries to conserve resources and decrease waste, we can pursue sustainability

Saanika Halapeti (11/28/18)

After traveling to Florida, I was fortunate enough to come across a mini fossil. This fossil is a representation of the past and coincides with our unit regarding biodiversity. Biodiversity can be seen - especially - in areas known as Biodiversity hotspots. However, when environmental factors influence different regions, many species are forced to move. Thus, scientists have begun to see evidence of this distribution of species through fossils. During one era, there may be a group of fossils in one region, but a certain change in the environment may lead to the shifting of these organisms. This shift can be seen by a cluster of those same fossils being located in a different area in a different era. Ultimately, fossils are extremely important to help us identify the patters of distribution in regards to species around the world.

This is a picture of a bass caught from Lake Lexington. In Lake Lexington, bass are usually secondary consumers who eat smaller fish or insects and thus by eating it, we are in turn tertiary consumers in this food chain. Both the bass and humans are heterotrophs because the food source comes from consuming other organisms and not self-produced. Humans are different in that they also will eat producers directly, making them omnivores because they operate at multiple trophic levels. A diet of bass would not be as efficient as a diet of producers, as only about 10% of the energy is passed on to the next trophic level, and thus primary consumerism yields more energy than tertiary consumerism.

This relates to apes because it shows how there are many people around the world that actually care about the earth and this is an example of a conservation process. Rather than throwing the bottle caps away only to deal a great harm to the environment, they have been used for something not only to symbolize how humans should view protecting nature but also how everyday things like bottle caps can make a big difference between the life or death of the environment or an animal.

Just like the picture below, layers upon layers of organic material build up to form fossil fuels such as coal and oil. However, the growing population and the rapid advancements that we see are all having negative consequences. Not only because of the pollution that they cause, but also because of the how we are exhausting finite resources. Coal and oil are nonrenewable resources as they will not be replenished within our lifetime. Essentially, humankind is utilizing fossil fuels to the point where we our rate of usage is exceeding the rate of which it can replenish. Additionally, we are causing unprecedented levels of gases to accumulate within the atmosphere which is perpetuating ozone layer depletion. Thus, we need to keep in mind that such fossil fuels will run out and the world will be devastated if we continue our current trend.

It uses less energy than our entire air conditioning system since it’s only heating up a small area versus the entire house. Still, it shows our (my family’s and developed countries’ in general) desire for a comfortable life and how that translates to a large reliance on nonrenewable resources for energy. This is a problem because although we’re a small proportion of the world population, we still use a majority of the energy and as more countries are becoming developed, humanity’s negative environmental impacts will only increase.

We may not think of these fruits and vegetable as “alien”, but since apples and oranges originate from Central to South or Eastern Asia and zucchinis originate in Central and South America, their very presence together on a table in Texas means that they all are living outside their original historical range and thus are not native species, which are species that live in a historically range that they have typically existed in for thousands or millions of years. Whether or not they are truly exotic or alien species is up for debate, but what is true is that after humans have facilitated globalization, three species from all corners of the globe together in a place where they are not native is now the norm, not the exception.

We also throw away huge amounts of paper when we are done on an assignment instead of recycling that towards a better use.
