John Winthrop was a very important figure for the puritans, because he continuously sought for upholding the principles of a Theocracy in the territory leading him to sacrifice his popularity as mentioned in the cite. He also composed a sermon which many pilgrims used and were motivated.

John Cotton was known for well by the puritans for being a preeminent teacher and what he contributed to the church. He treated the puritans very well leading him into a persecution.

Anna Hutchinson was a Puritan who began to decrease the intensity of traditional Puritan beliefs. She began to say that the things someone does doesn't immediately affect their pathway to heaven. She was persecuted for going against normal beliefs, but it was the start of new religious ideas. She ended up having a stillborn and everyone began to say she had given birth to the devil's child as punishment by god.

The Salem Witch Trials were an event in which people began to accuse people, mainly women, of witchcraft and relations with the devil. Anyone accused of witchcraft were executed in order to get rid of any forms of impurity in the village. This led to an outburst of accused witches accusing others in order to save themselves from execution. A lot of the superstition going around was caused by the war with the Native Americans and the French, making everyone more scared of their neighbors.

Many novels, poems, and plays inspired by the Puritans often consisted of people sinning or of the events during that time. Other works were very religious and further emphasized the ideas of Puritanism. Examples of this is The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne where a women sins and the public shames her. Another example is Arthur Millers' The Crucible that talks about the events of the Salem Witch Trials. Lastly, a sermon by Johnathan Edwards that exaggerated the results of sinning and how everyone would be damned to hell in a terrifying way.
