Wireless Fetal Monitoring devices are striking the labor and delivery world as the latest technology to ease the monitoring of the fetus and mother during the prenatal and perinatal period. This device is placed by the nurse to the patient's abdomen usually by sticky pads and directly monitors fetal heart rate, contractions, and maternal heart rate. The data collected by the device is transmitted to a central monitoring system and a Cloud-based server for storage. The nurse or physician can then monitor information in real-time via any device with access to the internet. Nursing Informatics is highly intertwined in the use of cloud computing and management of technology needed for device performance. McGonigle and Mastrian (2018) refer to wearable technology as an intervention that will only "further facilitate the use of computers in nursing practice and professional development" (p. 59).

Increased Mobility

Increased Comfort

Labor and delivery nurses know well that most pregnant women are continuously annoyed with long wires attaching uncomfortable bands and monitor part to their bodies limiting their ability to move about to ease labor pains. Wireless monitoring provides real-time fetal heart rate, contraction, and maternal heart rate data while allowing a small device to stick to the maternal abdomen free of cords attaching a patient to the wall.

Maternal/Fetal Safety

Technology Failures

The study by Boatin et al. (2015) revealed that two of the thirty-two pregnant women who participated in the pilot study expressed concern of potential unknown effects on the mother or the fetus, one stated "more of like radiation" (p. 9). Healthcare providers involved in the study were concerned with failures in Bluetooth connection or Wi-Fi failure. Hot spots had a more effective connection rate, but could incur more expense to the unit.

As a labor and delivery nurse, I believe that wireless fetal monitoring will be a positive attribute to the field. It can be difficult at times to tie up a mother-to-be laboring naturally to cords and a bulky machine base. Nonpharmalogical pain relief measures for labor include walking, rocking in a rocking chair and hip-swaying. All of these movements are complicated traditional monitoring. Accurate tracings are also complicated by traditional monitoring. Although costs will be incurred to implement these devices in a labor and delivery unit, the worth exists in terms of patient comfort and satisfaction.
