The Beginning of Obama's Presidency

The Obama victory helped fulfill one of the great ambitions of the civil rights struggle by showcasing the ability of extraordinarily talented black Americans to lead and excel in all facets of American life. First lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Sasha and Malia, extended this reimagining of black American life by providing a conspicuous vision of a healthy, loving and thriving African American family that defies still-prevalent racist stereotypes. (A Hopeful Moment on Race)

Barack Obama becoming our president has opened many eyes. This will be, if not already is, a significant event in our American history. It has sparked an inspiration not only in the lives of African-Americans, but in the lives of people of all races. He's shown us how far black people have come. Obama is the epitome of hard work leading to success. He did not come from a wealthy, two-parent household. However, he worked hard to become our President, and now he is a powerful figure in our society. His whole family is a great representation of a strong, modern African American family.

Attempts to Resolve Racial Inequality

Yet in acknowledging the limitations of Obama’s presidency on healing racial divisions and the shortcomings of his policies in uplifting black America, we may reach a newfound political maturity that recognizes that no one person — no matter how powerful — can single-handedly rectify structures of inequality constructed over centuries. (A Hopeful Moment on Race)

Although Obama is a powerful leader, he still couldn't completely terminate the prejudiced stereotypes of black Americans. This only shows exactly how much discrimination there is. He did put in all of his effort, and accomplished a lot in the two terms he served. For example, he spoke out about the "inequity in the criminal justice system in America." He fought for the rights of black America and proved that the system is unfair and unjust towards the black community. Obama said this because of the shootings of the unarmed black men and boys.

“What could more profoundly vindicate the idea of America than plain and humble people — unsung, the downtrodden, the dreamers not of high station, not born to wealth or privilege, not of one religious tradition but many — coming together to shape their country’s course?” (On a Bridge in Selma)

President Obama states that the people representing our America are not the rich and famous, but the "plain and humble" people. The people who are able to come together and connect with one another. America should be represented by the people who value joy, love, and their relationships rather than money or popularity. Obama says they are the best portrayal of our country because they are arguably the greatest and most important people in our society. These kinds of people are the glue in our culture- they hold us together. If all of America were them, there would be no hate, only acceptance. However, there are people who are opposite of them, so our country is better represented by the kind, humble citizens.

His presidency was a triumph over and a clear break from the past: “If you think nothing’s changed in the past 50 years, ask somebody who lived through the Selma or Chicago or Los Angeles of the 1950s,” Obama said in the spring of 2015. (In His Own Words)

Obama's two term presidency has made a huge impact on our country. He's made a difference by supporting the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Since he is a black man himself, it's inspiring how he is able to use his voice to empower his own race and other Americans. It's amazing how Obama is able to rise against stereotypes and haters trying to bring him down. Especially since people of his color skin have been put down and often been thought of as inferior to white people since the mid 1900's.
