He gets in the time machine and meets his safari guide Mr.Travis. Upon arriving in the past Eckels and two other hunters are instructed to follow directions from the guide and stay on the path. They are told that their actions in the past can have a huge impact on the future. The hunters get ready to shoot the dinosaur and Eckels sees the size of the creature and runs to the time machine to hide. The other hunters kill the creature and return to the time machine. Mr.Travis sees that Eckels has mud on his shoe and panics. Eckels appeals to Travis' greed and pays him to go home. Once at the present something seems different. The sign on the building and changed slightly. Eckels looks on the mud caked on his shoe he sees that he had stepped on a butterfly. The results on the election the night before had also changed.
