One thing I am not able to forgive myself for was how I treated a good friend in the past. For a few years even though we were great friends I would exclude her on occasion and I was not there to support her when she was going through a bad time in her life and she did not have other friends she could count on. Looking back, I was I did better. I think redemption means actively taking steps to be a better person than you were before (in regards to a specific incident). When you do something wrong, you leave the world in a worse place than you found it. When/if you redeem yourself you leave it better than how you found it.

The quote “The shifts of Fortune test the reliability of friends” speaks to the way friendships and loyalty can waver if one person is "doing better" or is more successful than another. As a friend, I feel like I am genuinely supportive of my friends' successes and achievements, but I have felt jealous and a desire to "be better" at times. If I were out of line, I would definitely want my friends to set me straight because I recognize that everyone can make mistakes or have lapses in judgement- and sometimes that can be me. My best friend and I have a great relationship and we have only gotten closer over the course of the last couple years. I feel our friendship works because we are able to understand in what situations its best to let the other person "rant" or just be right, and what situations its necessary to call them out. In addition, I think our friendship works because we have been able to talk about a lot of the same struggles both of us have- particularly our family situations- that we can't talk to anyone else about. The quote “If malice or envy were tangible and had a shape, it would be the shape of a boomerang" refers to the self-destructive nature of jealousy. Jealousy only eats away at the person who feels it, making it one of the most unhealthy emotions. That being said, even though it is unhealthy, I believe it is normal to feel jealous. Everyone wants things they do not/cannot have, and it is perfectly normal to see other people who have those things and feel jealous. I've experienced jealousy many times and to me it feels like anger but only directed toward myself. I am constantly mad that I am not another person. I've been jealous about people who are better at school than me, better at sports, people who look a certain way, people who have a better relationship with their families, and more. Jealousy is normal, but it usually means you need to reflect on yourself and why you are feeling that way in order to resolve it, because it can take over your life if you do not.

Similar to what I discussed in the first prompt, I watched other people mistreat a good friends and make her feel excluded and alone for no reason for a long period of time. I never spoke up about it and just ignored it for years. This led to her not being able to get support during a time of depression, and I always feel guilty for not saying anything or making an effort to be a better friend myself.

The quote “The guilty think all talk is of themselves" describes how guilt consumes Amir after he witnesses Hassan being raped. Anything Hassan says reminds him of his cowardice, and any praise from Baba bothers him (even though that was what he was chasing in the first place). I have carried guilt with me, and it feels like a weight that you will never be able to take off your shoulders. Sometimes you forget it is there, but when you are reminded it feels suffocating. I think I have redeemed myself, but I still find myself wishing that I acted the right way in the first place.

When my family members are proud of me, they usually show it through an exchange of words or hugs. However, they do not show it at every proud moment. I feel like its important to show pride sometimes because it makes kids feel loved and valued. However, in my opinion there should be moments where parents should not show pride because with too much kids can become used to seeking validation. This can also happen if parents show pride too little- kids will do anything to make their parents happy/proud at that point- so it is very hard to find a balance.

Amir clearly carries guilt over what happened between him and Hassan 26 years ago. However, he has not become a man who cannot stand up for anything. One example of Amir standing up for what he wants is choosing writing as a career path, against Baba's wishes: "My cheeks burned and guilt coursed through me, the guilt of indulging myself at the expense of his ulcer, his black fingernails and aching wrists. But I would stand my ground, I decided. I didn't want to sacrifice for Baba anymore" (Hosseini 113). At this point in the novel, Amir makes a decision based on what he wants and ignores Baba's disapproval- unlike what he did 26 years ago.

Amir finally redeems himself in chapters 20-22 by being punished. When Assef beats him, Amir is helpless and can only take the beating. Amir feels that because he is finally feeling pain, he has not "gotten away" with what he did to Hassan and he is finally atoning for his sins. He finally got what he deserved. Redemption is righting a past wrong, and although Amir cannot fix what happened 26 years ago he feels liberated because he has done everything he can to save Sohrab.

Love is the strongest form of attachment to another person/object. Based on this definition, I do believe Amir truly loves Hassan. He had his reasons for being jealous of him when they were younger, but their bond was definitely love. Amir feels so guilty about what he did because he loves Hassan. He grew up with him, played with him, and shared precious memories with him. Throughout his childhood, Hassan was the person he was the most attached to: "Hassan and I fed from the same breasts. We took our first steps on the same lawn in the same yard. And, under the same roof, we spoke our first words" (Hosseini 11). Sharing all this time together, teaching each other new things, and learning/growing together proves that Amir does love Hassan. Baba also does love Amir, but is bad at showing it. In reality, Amir is his son, and Baba's disappointment in Amir is always rooted in concern for his wellbeing. When Baba talks to Rahim Khan about Amir's lack of courage in certain situations, he says, "a boy who won’t stand up for himself becomes a man who can’t stand up for anything" (Hosseini 221). Baba worries for Amir because everything he does is to help Amir be successful in the future, and he wants him to be self-sufficient.
