Using the information you learned in the CAST Online resource, search for images of UDL in action. This can be an example of something you've used in your own environments, something you found online, or a photo of UDL out in the "real world."

1. Add your image; 2. Identify the UDL; 3. Explain why this is UDL

An important part of UDL is classroom layout, making your classroom space navigable and accessible for students. It’s key to try finding a balance between incorporating/representing student interests, but also making sure not to be too distractible. The room should accommodate different student needs, so when they come in each day, they will feel like they can exist in a safe space that also gives them what materials they might need. You can incorporate multiple means of representation along the walls, whether that’s through informative posters or student artwork and assignments. A lot goes into choosing how the classroom is arranged as well, and in thinking about what layout would be best for student learning.

https://adiponiojuniorteacher.wordpress.com/2013/12/06/professional-practice/

This classroom layout exemplifies UDL by demonstrating the importance of having designated areas for different activities. Having "stations" allows the students to have the freedom to choose what kind of learning style is best for them, as well as creates a flexible environment. This recognizes the individuality of students' learning abilities, creates a variety of activities to choose from, and demonstrates multiple means of action and expression. I especially like that there is an area for computers, an area for independent study, and an area for collaboration with others. This gives students multiple methods of engaging with content.

https://kr.pinterest.com/pin/359021401567747629/

In this classroom, there are different areas where different types of learning will occur. You see areas where whole group instruction will happen (student tables), computers for visual/audio learning, rugs and beanbag chairs to allow children to get more comfortable and perhaps work alone or with a small group. They are different spaces within the learning environment where children can move freely and access different parts of the space.

In this image, we can observe a large group of (blurry) students accessing different portions of the classroom. This classroom provides many different accommodations to the students, such as a table that can support a wheelchair, or the beanbags for those who want to relax. These different stations around the classroom allow for students to be flexible in whatever kind of environment they want to work in, and by providing them with these sort of options they will be able to better engage with the material. The UDL principle that best illustrates the image is multiple means of action and expression.

This image shows a classroom designed with various flexible seating arrangements. This allows students to have the autonomy to choose which seating option will best suit their individual needs, including yoga balls, small adirondack chairs and comfortable cushions. This setup allows the students to collaborate, with furniture that can easily be rearranged if needed. This classroom has Multiple Means of Representation with visual aids, written instructions on the walls, and interactive areas. This classroom embodies UDL implementation by creating a flexible and inclusive environment that responds to the diverse needs of different students. The movable furniture and different zones for activities support collaborative learning and independent work, which accommodates various learning styles.

I remember my mom having different types of seating in her classroom and I always loved going to her classroom to sit. It can allow the students to feel more comfortable and relaxed.

In this image, we see not only flexible setting but different resources throughout each type of seating found in the classroom, such as the whiteboard desks found in the image. This image comes from a company called MooreCo, who designs flexible seating to help implement UDL in the classroom. This image connect to the three main ideas of UDL: engagement, representation, and, action and expression. For engagement, the classroom provides students with multiple choices for seating and having resources easily accessible for students to reach so they can create a sense of autonomy. For representation, MooreCo provides seating that can give students large amounts of space to work, pods to help decrease noise, and is intentional with their design to they aren't contributing to distracting elements for students. As for action and engagement, flexible seating allows students a variety of seating so students can be physically comfortable and find a seating arrangement that best works for them. Having students physically comfortable helps boost their imagination and helps them focus on how they want interact with material.

I chose this classroom image because I appreciated the access to the seating provided. The seats are adjustable in height and are built to fit the needs of students of all sizes. Furthermore, the seats are comfortable and soft, reducing the stress often felt in a classroom by adding comfort. By making classrooms more comfortable, you increase your students' ability to focus and promote engagement. This is a UDL implementation because it no longer pushes the one-size-fits-all mindset about students. Instead, it emphasizes a student-centered approach and eliminates many unnecessary barriers students face, such as size discrimination. It is benefiting students with explicit needs, but also students without.
