The national capital is <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing">Beijing</a>, the largest city and financial center in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shanghai">Shanghai</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenzhen">Shenzhen</a> serves as the technological and innovative hub.<br><br></div><div><br>China emerged as one of the world's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cradle_of_civilization">first civilizations</a> in the fertile basin of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_River">Yellow River</a> in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_China_Plain">North China Plain</a>. China was one of the world's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_regions_by_past_GDP_(PPP)">foremost economic powers</a> for most of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pax_Sinica">two millennia</a> from the 1st until the 19th century. For millennia, China's political system was based on absolute hereditary monarchies, or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynasties_in_Chinese_history">dynasties</a>, beginning with the semi-legendary <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xia_dynasty">Xia dynasty</a> in the 21st century <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Era">BCE</a>. Since then, China has expanded, fractured, and re-unified numerous times. In the 3rd century BCE, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qin%27s_wars_of_unification">the Qin reunited core China</a> and established <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qin_dynasty">the first Chinese empire</a>. The succeeding <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_dynasty">Han dynasty</a> (206 BCE – 220 CE) saw some of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_and_technology_of_the_Han_dynasty">most advanced technology</a> at that time, including <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papermaking">papermaking</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compass">compass</a>, along with agricultural and medical improvements. The invention of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunpowder">gunpowder</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Movable_type">movable type</a> in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tang_dynasty">Tang dynasty</a> (618 – 907) and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Song_Dynasty">Northern Song Dynasty</a> (960 – 1127) completed the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Great_Inventions">Four Great Inventions</a>. Tang culture spread widely in Asia, as the new <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_Road">Silk Road</a> brought traders to as far as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesopotamia">Mesopotamia</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horn_of_Africa">Horn of Africa</a>. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qing_dynasty">Qing Empire</a>, China's last dynasty, which formed the territorial basis for modern China, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Century_of_humiliation">suffered</a> heavy <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unequal_treaty">losses</a> to foreign <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperialism">imperialism</a>.<br><br></div><div><br>The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarchy_of_China">Chinese monarchy</a> collapsed in 1912 with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1911_Revolution">1911 Revolution</a>, when the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_China_(1912%E2%80%931949)">Republic of China (ROC)</a> replaced the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qing_dynasty">Qing dynasty</a>. China was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Sino-Japanese_War">invaded</a> by the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Japan">Empire of Japan</a> during <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II">World War II</a>. With a multicultural population and recognising the need to respect cultural identities, Singapore has four <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Singapore">official languages</a>; <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_English">English</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malay_language">Malay</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_Mandarin">Mandarin</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamil_language">Tamil</a>. English is the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingua_franca">lingua franca</a>. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiracialism">Multiracialism</a> is enshrined in the constitution and continues to shape <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_in_Singapore">national policies</a> in education, housing, and politics.<br><br></div><div><br>Modern Singapore <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Founding_of_modern_Singapore">was founded</a> in 1819 by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamford_Raffles">Sir Stamford Raffles</a> as a trading post of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Empire">British Empire</a>. In 1867, the colonies in Southeast Asia were reorganised and Singapore came under the direct control of Britain as part of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straits_Settlements">Straits Settlements</a>. During the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_World_War">Second World War</a>, Singapore was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_occupation_of_Singapore">occupied by Japan</a> in 1942, and returned to British control as a separate <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_of_Singapore">crown colony</a> following <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrender_of_Japan">Japan's surrender</a> in 1945. Singapore gained self-governance in 1959 and in 1963 became part of the new federation of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysia">Malaysia</a>, alongside <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_of_Malaya">Malaya</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Colony_of_North_Borneo">North Borneo</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_Colony_of_Sarawak">Sarawak</a>. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore_in_Malaysia">Ideological differences</a> led to Singapore being expelled from the federation two years later and it became an independent country.<br><br></div><div><br>After early years of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Republic_of_Singapore#1965_to_1979">turbulence</a> and despite lacking natural resources and a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinterland">hinterland</a>, the nation rapidly developed to become one of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Asian_Tigers">Four Asian Tigers</a> based on external trade, becoming a highly <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Developed_country">developed country</a>; it is ranked ninth on the UN <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index">Human Development Index</a> and has the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita">second-highest GDP per capita (PPP)</a> in the world. Singapore is the only country in Asia with a AAA sovereign rating from all major rating agencies. It is a major financial and shipping hub, consistently ranked the most expensive city to live in since 2013, and has been identified as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_haven">tax haven</a>. Singapore is placed highly in key social indicators: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Singapore">education</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Singapore">healthcare</a>, quality of life, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_safety">personal safety</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_housing_in_Singapore">housing</a>, with a home-ownership rate of 91%. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singaporeans">Singaporeans</a> enjoy one of the world's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy">longest life expectancies</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Internet_connection_speeds">fastest Internet connection speeds</a> and one of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_infant_and_under-five_mortality_rates">lowest infant mortality rates in the world</a>.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore#cite_note-thirdworldtofirst-8"><sup>[7]<br></sup></a><br></div><div><br>Singapore is a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitary_state">unitary</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parliamentary_republic">parliamentary republic</a> with a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_system">Westminster system</a> of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicameralism">unicameral</a> parliamentary government. Denmark's geography is characterised by flat, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arable_land">arable land</a>, sandy coasts, low elevation, and a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperate_climate">temperate climate</a>. It has a total area of 42,943 km<sup>2</sup> (16,580 sq mi) <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark#cite_note-area-14"><sup>[8]</sup></a> and a population of 5.86 million (as of 2021), of which 800,000 live in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_city">capital</a> and largest city <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen">Copenhagen</a>.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark#cite_note-pop1-32"><sup>[18]<br></sup></a><br></div><div><br>The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Denmark">unified kingdom of Denmark</a> emerged in the eighth century as a proficient maritime power amid the struggle for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominium_maris_baltici">control of the Baltic Sea</a>.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark#cite_note-FOOTNOTEStoneBainBoothParnell200831-12"><sup>[7]</sup></a> In 1397, it joined Norway and Sweden to form the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalmar_Union">Kalmar Union</a>, until <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_War_of_Liberation">the latter's secession</a> in 1523; the remaining Kingdom of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denmark%E2%80%93Norway">Denmark–Norway</a> persisted until 1814. Beginning in the 17th century, several wars with the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_Empire">Swedish Empire</a> resulted in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cession">territorial cessions</a>, and following the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleonic_Wars">Napoleonic Wars</a>, Norway was absorbed into Sweden while Denmark kept the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland">Iceland</a>. A surge of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Denmark#The_19th_century">nationalist movements</a> in the 19th century were defeated in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Schleswig_War">First Schleswig War</a>, though the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Schleswig_War">Second Schleswig War</a> of 1864 resulted in the loss of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchy_of_Schleswig">Duchy of Schleswig</a> to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prussia">Prussia</a>. Denmark remained neutral during <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I">World War I</a> but regained the northern half of Schleswig in 1920. The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics_of_Denmark">government</a> and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folketing">national parliament</a> are seated in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copenhagen">Copenhagen</a>, the nation's <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_city">capital</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_Denmark">largest city</a>, and main commercial centre.
