Plyler v. Doe, was a case in which the Supreme Court of the United States struck down a state statute denying funding for education to unauthorized immigrant children and simultaneously struck down a municipal school district's attempt to charge unauthorized immigrants an annual $1,000 tuition fee for each undocumented 6 immigrant student to compensate for the lost state funding. The Plyler case affirmed the rights of undocumented children to attend schools in the nation, and set a precedent that schools could not ask students or families for their immigration status because it might have a "cooling effect" on their school attendance.

I think about all of our newcomers now and I can't even imagine this happening.
