The theme of this poem is that when you don't pursue something that you want to do, you can never really get over the feelings of regret and constant thoughts of what could have been. I think the message the author is trying to convey is that you shouldn't let anything prevent you from reaching your full potential and following your dreams. Some of the words or phrases used in the poem that help to develop this theme are when the author says, "Does it fester like a sore?" and "Maybe it just sags like a heavy load." These very clearly communicate the feelings the author has towards wasted potential and what becomes of it.

The theme of this poem is dreams. The message that the author is trying to convey is that dreams seem to be hard to reach at certain points in life. When he uses words like "dry up" I think hes talking about the after math of when that dream you desperately wanted wasn't followed, so you become discouraged and life sometime seems to have no meaning so it dries up.

The theme is about how we deal with dreams we never achieve. The poem uses different phrases with a variety of connotations to try and describe what happens to the dream. For example, "dry up" simply means to lose value over time, and become a lifeless husk, neither good nor bad, only inactive. Comparatively, "fester like a sore" implies that the dream makes the dreamer feel actively bad for failing to achieve their goal, getting worse over time. "Crust and sugar over" is the most interesting, because even though that entails expiring, these qualities do not have an inherently bad connotation, creating a very vague and difficult to describe meaning. All these examples allow the reader to determine which description best suits the way they view their deferred dreams.

The theme of the poem is about how one's dreams can effect their perspectives and also what could happen if you fail or even after you fulfill it. This makes one question whether they should move on or continue to fight for the dream they want to accomplish. This also conveys regrets to oneself when they think back on a dream that could've been done, but never pursued it. The overall message that the poet is trying to convey is that you should never doubt your abilities for following a dream and should always try because afterwards, you might regret not trying at all and just assuming that you don't have it in you.

The theme of "Harlem" by Hughes is that dreams can be destructive to an individual. If you are never able to satisfy yourself and remain fixated on a certain dream, it can negatively affect you. Hughes gives many suggestions as to what dreams may do to a person. Some people are preventing themselves from pursuing their dreams further or others are waiting on something that will never happen. Words and phrases such as "fester", dry up", and "crust over" help develop this theme.
