They were used in both World Wars, but more notably in  the first. In the first Battle of the Marne, the French army used approximately 72 pigeons to carry messages. In the Battle of Verdun, an estimated 12 important messages were delivered via carrier pigeon. Some were even given special names, such as 'The Mocker' or 'Cher Ami." Cher Ami, who lost an eye and a leg, but still managed to deliver a message that saved a group of American Infantry.
