Della only had 1 dollar and eightyseven cents to buy a Christmas present for Jim. The tone of the story is a sad but Heartfelt kind of tone. They live in an apartment with very limited and worn out furniture.

While Jim got Della some combs for her hair. Neither of them could use their gift s though because Della cut her hair and Jim sold his watch. They both sold their prized possessions to buy each other gifts for Christmas. and Jim realized they couldn't use their gifts they got for each other and were a bit disappointed. They both gave up their most prized possessions to give each other gifts for Christmas. Della and Jim decide to put away their gifts until they can both use them.
