In the chosen episodes, single-stories are confirmed because it's showing how one who acts tough and one who carries this "typical" man character can't be less than that. These episodes depicts how single- stories are confirmed because Mickey had to hide his relationship with Ian because he was afraid of how his Dad and family would react. Once, Frank found him and Ian having sex and Mickey said "If my dad finds out about this he will me himself"(2.8) Mickey warned Ian of what would happen to him of his dad found out about them. Throughout, his life Mickey has lived according to what his Dad wants him to be and what everyone expects him act because of the Image his family portrays.

The gender roles are limiting for men in these two episodes because Mickey and Ian are not allowed to love each other freely. Mickey's fear that his father might find out that he doesn't like men, leads him into getting married and having a child by a woman who he doesn't love.
In addition, the household in which Mickey was raised in was very homophobic and words such as "Fags" were used to describe Gay people.

The show depicts how Mikey challenges with cultural exceptions because according to how he was raised man and man shouldn't be allowed to be together or fall in love. This has put up a lot of emotional and psychological barriers between his relationship with Ian. In the beginning their relationship Mikey did not like Ian kissing him or showing any type of affection towards him only sexual contact. Throughout, the show Mikeys attitude towards his Identity stayed the same until he came out to his dad and got beaten by him brutally. Mikey also experiences social conflicts coming out as gay in a heterosexual world because he would be the kind of guy who would bully someone for being gay, so, he realized that he was like those he bullied he didn't know how to come to terms. Also, his drive for his Dad's approval drove him into a life that he didn't want
