Translation of the Bible

The Bible had originally been in Latin, but only the priests and pope were able to read it because they were the only ones educated to. John Wycliffe and his followers, in 1382 had translated the Bible into English and that allowed Christians to read the Bible themselves. Lastly, In 1517 Martin Luther had translated the Bible into German and created the Luther Bible.

Printing Press

The printing press was created in Korea in the 14th century, this machine was created to help move text and images onto multiple pieces of paper. During the Reformation in 1440, Johannes Gutenberg had recreated the printing press making a better version of it. The printing press had been used to make thousands of indulgences for the Church and later on used to make copies of the Bible.

Protestantism

The Reformation became one of the basis of Protestantism, it is also one of the three major branches of Christianity. The Reformation had led to the revision of certain basic beliefs of Christianity. This had led to different types of Protestant religions that had separated from the Roman Catholic Church.

King Henry VIII

King Henry VIII was a Defender of Faith and had supported the Catholic Church. In 1509 he had married his first wife Catherine of Aragon, but when she was pregnant she had not given him a son. He had wanted to divorce Catherine for not being able to give him son, which had led to the Act of Supremacy. Henry had then created the Church of England and declared himself the head of the church.

Charles V

Charles V was the King of Spain during the beginning of the Protestant Reformation and was the Holy Roman Emperor. For his time he was the richest and most powerful person alive at just the age of 19. Since Charles V was very young when he went into power, he was very politically weak and didn't know what he was doing.

Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I was King Henry's first child with Catherine of Aragon, and since she wasn't a son, when he divorced Catherine she never really knew her father. When Edward VI and Mary I died, she had taken over as queen of England and reestablished Protestant influence. She had created the Anglican Church and religious tolerance for dissenters.

Secularization

The Reformation had led to a quick shift in investments away from the religious region and more towards secular purposes. With the power of rulers increasing, it is paving the way for the publishing of the modern nation-state. Construction from the church had been switched to building administrative buildings and palaces.

Changes of trade

With the change of the reformation it affected trade with multiple European countries. It had led to better transportation systems, with that it helped increase the amount of trade. The acceptance of the Protestant faith was also a big influence of trade between European countries.

Literacy and Education

The teaching of literacy and education devolved through out the Reformation and made a huge impact on the community. Education was divided by all different types of social classes like clerks, student, printers etc. They also educated everyone on the church and everything they needed to know about god/the bible.

95 Thesis

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 thesis on the castle church door. His 95 thesis was about ideas about Christianity that questioned how the church was teaching people about their faiths and beliefs. Luther had argued with the church that there needed to have changed made and that people can only be saved by their faith of Jesus Christ and the graces of God.

Conflict with the Church

Since Luther's idea of the 95 thesis, the church had thought of him as a heretic that needed to be dealt with. Martin Luther mainly had disagreed with the church selling indulgences. Which means people could buy their way out of their sins, which he had stated in the 95 thesis that people must prove their faith in God to not go to hell. In the end, the church had gathered Luther to the Diet of Worms and had him excommunicated from the church, which means he was now an outlaw.

Spread of Luther's ideas

Martin Luther had used the printing press as a way to spread his ideas of how the church should be changed or reformed. From his prints he had became the most famous man in Europe, which meant people from all around have now heard of his ideas. One of his main accomplishments was how he translated the New Testament into German, making people be able to read the bible by them selves.

Theology

John Calvin during the Reformation had created his own form of Protestant Christianity called Calvinism. Calvinism represents the truth of the Bible, and that the Church is led by Christ in a Christian community. With using some of Luther's ideas he believed that salvation should be gained through faith and faith alone.

Predestination

Predestination is apart of Calvinism and states that God chose people for salvation before the world was created. Calvin believed that God's will has absolute power and he has the foreknowledge for all things created. He also believed that God's law of predestination is based on nothing outside of himself.

Legacy

Calvin's methods for teachings about reformation of the church has influence around the world. One of Calvin's famous students, John Knox, had founded the reformed church of Scotland cause of his ideas. Calvin's Influence has helped churches all around the world during the reformation and truly helped reform the churches beliefs.
