This is our initial idea for set design. We want it to look like a studio as we are trying to portray a dancers journey and feel like a class through the ages into burn out.

I wanted to portray the first initial signs of burn out within this contemporary solo and section. This is where the piece starts getting darker and we as the characters start becoming really burnt out and really start losing the love of what we are doing. I’m going to have to use floppy movements that aren’t as strong to portray to the audience what is going on with us.

This is some initial inspiration for the contemporary section. I want it to be very intense, transitioning more into the robotic theme for the end. However it won’t be as strong as this as we still need to look burnt out.

I started a presentation with the vibe of the lighting we are wanting for each section. From the way we are lighting from start to end it’s going to add a lot to our storytelling.

Me and Lucy started thinking of choreographic ideas for the contemporary section today. This was difficult as the room was extremely loud and we couldn't hear our music properly, but we still wanted to get something done so started choreography anyway. We are trying to showcase the tiredness but not be too obvious with it so trying to portray this theme through movement.

This video is showing the initial rehearsals I have been present for for other peoples sections. This is obviously important as we all need to learn each others sections and make sure we all have enough content learnt to stand out in the piece. On reflection you can see in Neve's section in this video that I get some of the movements wrong so I will need to practice this before the next rehearsal.

Me and Lucy worked well together when creating the choreography, our ideas bounced off of each other very well and we had similar ideas for where we wanted to take the piece. However, when we tried it to music it didn't fit with the song, which is quite hard to choreograph to. Because of this next time I choreograph by myself or with someone else I am going to make sure that the room is quieter and I can hear the music so I can be happy with what we create.

These are the progressions we have made this week within our piece. We have finished both Michael's and Neve's sections and got through most of Mya's as well. This means that we have started / finished 4 sections of our piece, with the only one not started yet being the contemporary finale section. This leaves us in a good place choreographically and we are giving ourselves plenty of time to make amendments later into the process.

Upon reflection I have realised that my initial plan for the start of the contemporary section will not be able to happen now. My initial plan was for everyone to come onto stage 30 seconds into the track; however because a lot of the cast is in Neve's section right before, the only people free are May and Freya. Because of this I have decided to give them a duet at the start of this section. For this duet I think I am going to re-choreograph as I would like to add more contact work into this so for now I will be changing what me and Lucy have initially made up.

In this video me and Freya are starting initial ideas for her and Mya's duet. However, when rehearsing we had the idea for her to try making something up with Michael as for the contact we wanted they would look really good together because of the height difference. Because of this they made up the first 30 seconds using some of these ideas and I moved on to the next part of the section where everyone comes on stage.

This rehearsal we were also trying to sort out the music so I taught the contemporary section to a smaller group to see how I like it. I will teach it to everyone next session and position this as well.

I booked a studio for our group this week. This is so we can play our music loud and can really hear what we are choreographing to. We will also have the space of the whole room instead of just a section, so it will be easier to get stuff done.

Today in rehearsal we finished the contemporary section of our piece. I taught up until the circle and then we made up the very last bit as a group. Now all we have left to do for this section is the very ending.

In todays rehearsal we started the ending of the piece that Lucy has choreographed. We also tried out a lift idea for the ending of the piece, we just need to figure out where this will go.

Appendix 19 - Final Edit of the Music

Today we finished editing the whole mix for our piece. We all sat down together to make sure that we were happy with each section. We ended up having to cut a lot of the final section as the song was quite long and our time came to around 11 minutes. Because of this we cut the last song as we hadn't finished the choreography for this yet, so it is easier to cut this down instead of a section where we already have content.

Today we have finished each individual section. This means that next rehearsal we need to figure out the transitions so then we can start doing run throughs. In reflection to this rehearsal, I am considering changing the circle section of my choreography. However I will try cleaning it first and then if I still don't like it I will change it after that.

From sorting out our transition sections, I now have a short solo after the jazz funk piece which will be mostly acting. This will be the first sign of exhaustion throughout the whole piece, so I will need to plan my movement to make sure I am portraying the story as it is the first foreshadowing in the piece.

Today we did our first every run through with every group. We decided as a group to do our run through in costume to see if all of our changes would work. As this is the first time we did it with a lot of space and an audience some things went wrong so we will have to work on them.

Looking back at our show run today we have realised we need to change the costume for Mya's piece as no one got on stage in time and some people were not fully dressed. Because of this instead of changing the trousers into jeans or shorts we are just going to keep on the grey joggers from jazz funk and put on our tops. This way will mean that we will be able to all get our shoes on and it will be less stressful for us to perform. However, I am glad we did this run through in costume (even though it didn't go very well) because now we know what we need to do to make sure the piece runs smoothly.

For our starting piece the colorful things we ordered have arrived and so this is the updated costume for our opening section. This gets across the era of the dance more whilst also helping with the story.

This is a video of us cleaning Neve's section of the piece. We haven't been able to do this properly as Neve has been off so this is one of the sections that needed cleaning the most. We were also making a few changes now that we all know it to make it a bit more interesting.

In rehearsal today we cleaned all of our pieces and filmed them so we will be able to watch them back and see where we need to improve. Now that the piece is finished and the show is this week we want to make sure every big group piece looks together and clean.

Here are some of the changes we have made to the contemporary section. I decided to take out the circle fast feet section from before, but we still liked the formation for the circle. We also needed to take on Jasmin's note of adding in more tired sections, so we decided to repeat the feet from before in a different formation. For other parts of this section we were just trying to fill out little bits that felt awkward to try and convey the story a bit more for the audience.

Today we did our first full costume run. In this we realised that our changes to the costume all work and everyone will be able to get back on stage in time. We also know that the costumes add to the piece and help convey our storyline. The dance also looks a lot cleaner from our previous rehearsals, meaning it is in a good place for the show this week. Now all we need to adjust is any final changes to add into our piece.

Today we had our tech run in the space. This was to try our routine on the stage for the first time and figure out our lighting (make sure we are always lit when dancing). Now we feel more prepared for the show tomorrow.

From our tech run I have realised I need to move more over to the left in my acting solo. This is so I stay lit and the audience can see what I'm doing, this will help tell the story. Jasmin also told me whilst I was dancing to maybe take the acting down to my knees and play into being tired even more. We also said as a group we are going to get off the stage by the end of the music so that it is just Neve at the end. This will make is more effective for the audience.

We performed very well at the show, everything looked clean and our acting was portrayed well from each person. I am overall happy with my performance and I believe I did my best. You can see from this performance that we collaborated very well as a group as everyone has their own moment and section to shine, with everyone being clean and contributing to the group sections as well. If I could change anything I would've sorted out my acting section earlier so that I felt better on the actual day.

When reflecting on the sections I have realized that the second section doesn’t have a lot of reason or substance within the piece. Because of this I have decided to make a little change. The theme of the second section is going to be me trying to be normal and act how I think will make me ‘belong’ with other people. From this new theme I am going to be wearing normal clothes to contrast the blue and alien theme in the dark room. Hopefully using an outside location and pedestrian clothing will help portray my theme of me being an alien on the inside but trying to pretend like i’m not different to other people.

Today I filmed the first sections of my solo in the blue room. I am very happy with the footage I managed to get today and will be using this in my final edit of the piece. I also had an idea for the outside section to change my costume to natural clothes that I would wear on any day. This is to get across my concept of feeling different on the inside but presenting yourself as the same as everyone else to fit in.

I decided to film the outside section on the band stand in my local park. This is also using my feedback of a big empty space being effective as I am completely on my own in all of the shots. It was also raining on my filming day, however I think this adds to effect of the piece and my movement.

Today I finished filming for my solo by filming the outside sections. I liked the rain in the shots even though it's not what I had planned. When filming I also shot some of it with the camera following my movement. I'm glad I did this as it will add some diversity to the shots throughout the edit, making it a more interesting watch.
