Blanche appears very insecure about herself. She acts prideful towards others, but is really very unsure about herself and how she looks. For instance, when Blanche is talking to Mitch, she says "I call her little in spite of the fact she's somewhat older than I. Just slightly. Less than a year"(pg. 1799). Blanche is actually over 5 years older than Stella, but she is insecure about her age, among many other things, and lies about it to save face.

Blanche (Kassidy)

Personality: Blanche is very flirtatious. She loves attention from men even though she pretends to be shy about it. When she first met Stanley she flirted with him and then his friend Mitch. It seems like she leads men on just to feed her own ego and make her feel better about herself. When talking to Mitch, Blanche pretends to have difficulty reading and tells him the story behind his inscription sounds romantic. "It sounds like a romance" (1798). Blanche flirts with men in order to get them to do things for her and to feel important. She seems to use flirting as a type of defense to keep people from questioning her too much and to hide her true intentions or actions.

(What the character looks like)
Blanche is dainty and is shocked to see the condition in which her sister lives. "Her delicate beauty must avoid a strong light. There is something about her uncertain manner, as well as her white clothes, that suggests a moth" (1779). She also spends money on extravagant and unnecessary items. She uses these to enhance her looks because this is her only source of self esteem. "Pearls! Ropes of them! - Bracelets of solid gold too" (1790)! These quotes show that she depends on her look as a source of compliments which she ultimately bases her whole self esteem off of.

by Marky Mark

Stanley has a very short temper and is prone to taking out his frustration on others. For example, Stanley begins yelling at Stella "hush up" when she turns on the radio (Page 1797). When Stella and Blanche flee the home, Stanley staggers around drunk shouting out his wife's name. Stanley is also antagonistic with his friends at the poker game. He gets after them for discussing things other than the poker game. When Mitch brings up his sick mother, Stanley retorts, "Aw, for the sake of Jesus, go home then" (Page 1795). Overall Stanley is kind of a buzz kill.

Has a manly look about him. "Animal joy is implicit in all his movements and attitudes." Pg 1786. Dresses very plainly in jeans and a white t-shirt. Disgruntled looking while drunk. Very primal looking as a reflection of his thought process over romance.

He thinks she cheated Stella out of her share of the fortune and in turn cheated him out of it as well. "She didn't show you no papers, no deed of sale or nothing like that, huh?" pg. 1789. He goes through her stuff searching for a bill of sale and ends up finding clothing items that he thinks is expensive. Stella is a woman that is very calm and "gentle" as the author describes her. Readers also get the impression that she's a modest woman who wears very modest clothes. Some of the comments Blanche makes to Stella shows how Blanche has always talked over Stella. Stella is always quiet when talking and often gets interrupted by Blanche. Because she plays off rude comments from Blanche with calm responses, we can see that maybe Stella is used to being talked over and degraded by her sister.

"BLANCHE: ...you've put on some weight, yes, your just as plump as a little partridge!...
STELLA: Now, Blanche -
BLANCHE: ... An example of this is when he accuses Blanche of stealing the family fortune from Stella. Even though Stella is very upset with Blanche and doesn't want her to stay at their house anymore, she still has a feeling of guilty when Blanche is taken away. She says, "What have I done to my sister? Oh, God, what have I done to my sister?" (page 1842). We can tell that Stella deeply cares about her family, even if they have a lot of flaws. Stella loves her sister. Also, Stella is a strong woman even though she lets Stanley tell her what to do. She stills acts on her own opinions and does what she wants.

Blanches looks are the same but, by the end of the play, the other characters look at her differently. "the other men look at her curiously" (1841). The other characters in the story now look at her like she is some kind of disease. They don't really know how to handle her and feel like the best way to deal with the problem is to ignore it all together.

by Marky Mark

Stanley continues to be a jerk to his family and friends in the final scenes of the story. While Blanche is changing in the bathroom he pounds on the door and yells, "Hey, canary bird! Toots! Get out of the bathroom" (Page 1824). Later in the play he has some "inappropriate contact" with Blanche, but continues his relationship with Stella.

By Carter
Personality:
Stanley doesn't really change in the final scenes of the play. He is still very firm on what he believes and doesn't let people talk back to him. He becomes even more animalistic and mean to he people he is around. This shows when he fights and rapes Blanche after Mitch leaves the apartment. "We've had his date with each other from the beginning!" Page 1837

"I couldn't believe her story and go on living with Stanley." Blanche's character also becomes more likable to readers as they feel sympathy for her.
