Personality: Blanche is very flirtatious. She loves attention from men even though she pretends to be shy about it. When she first met Stanley she flirted with him and then his friend Mitch. It seems like she leads men on just to feed her own ego and make her feel better about herself. When talking to Mitch, Blanche pretends to have difficulty reading and tells him the story behind his inscription sounds romantic. "It sounds like a romance" (1798). Blanche flirts with men in order to get them to do things for her and to feel important. Blanche is dainty and is shocked to see the condition in which her sister lives. "Her delicate beauty must avoid a strong light. There is something about her uncertain manner, as well as her white clothes, that suggests a moth" (1779). She also spends money on extravagant and unnecessary items. She uses these to enhance her looks because this is her only source of self esteem. "Pearls! Ropes of them! - Bracelets of solid gold too" (1790)! Stella says this to her sister Blanche after the events of the previous night. Blanche is urging her sister to get away from her husband who hit her, but Stella refuses. She is blinded by her love for this man, and for their unborn child. She has accepted the abuse as her reality as shown on page 1784
"STELLA: I assure you I wasn't just blinded by all the brass
BLANCHE: That's not what I-
STELLA: But of course there were things to adjust myself to later on."

Stanley has a very short temper and is prone to taking out his frustration on others. For example, Stanley begins yelling at Stella "hush up" when she turns on the radio (Page 1797). When Stella and Blanche flee the home, Stanley staggers around drunk shouting out his wife's name. Stanley is also antagonistic with his friends at the poker game. He gets after them for discussing things other than the poker game. When Mitch brings up his sick mother, Stanley retorts, "Aw, for the sake of Jesus, go home then" (Page 1795). Overall Stanley is kind of a buzz kill.

Stella is a woman that is very calm and "gentle" as the author describes her. Readers also get the impression that she's a modest woman who wears very modest clothes. She's a young looking woman who is much different than her husband who is very rough looking.

Some of the comments Blanche makes to Stella shows how Blanche has always talked over Stella. Stella is always quiet when talking and often gets interrupted by Blanche. Because she plays off rude comments from Blanche with calm responses, we can see that maybe Stella is used to being talked over and degraded by her sister.

Personality:
Stanley is very firm on his beliefs when he gets something into his head. An example of this is when he accuses Blanche of stealing the family fortune from Stella. Even when she shows him proof of how she lost the plantation with the papers, he still says he's going to take them to a lawyer. He also doesn't take lip from anyone. This shows when he is playing poker with his friends and whenever they would make a joke or try and tell him something he would just yell at them. Then once Stella told him to let them play the radio he hit her.
"Mitch: I'm out again. I oughta go home pretty soon.

She says, "What have I done to my sister? Oh, God, what have I done to my sister?" (page 1842). We can tell that Stella deeply cares about her family, even if they have a lot of flaws. Stella loves her sister. Also, Stella is a strong woman even though she lets Stanley tell her what to do. Stanley continues to be a jerk to his family and friends in the final scenes of the story. While Blanche is changing in the bathroom he pounds on the door and yells, "Hey, canary bird! Toots! Get out of the bathroom" (Page 1824). Later in the play he has some "inappropriate contact" with Blanche, but continues his relationship with Stella.
