A girl named Coraline (not Caroline) moves with her mother and father to The Pink Palace Apartments, a seemingly beautiful and colorful home for the gloomy family. Coraline explores every inch, visits every part, finds every secret, until she finds a small door in the wall. She enters in the night, being lured in by a jumping mouse, to find that this door is a portal to another world.

Or, another Pink Palace, I should say, where everything is different. Other mother and other father with shining button eyes, neighbors who put on amazing shows, delicious food, amazing colors. It was a wish come true for such a deprived girl such as Coraline. But, what seems like a dream curls into a horrifying nightmare as the spider envelopes it's prey in silence. I assure you, with no doubt, you should be careful what you wish for.

His antics often come off as silly or mean, but he cares for his friends to the point of risking his life to save them in dangerous situations.
He seems lonely before meeting Coraline, his colors truly bleeding out as we see him communicate with her and the rest of the characters. He's sweet and always makes sure he's there for a friend, even if they don't want him to be. He's the ultimate sidekick to the wondrous Coraline Jones.

She is known as The Beldam. The Beldam closely watches for kids who feel neglected in their new home at the apartments and lures them in with a false sense of joy and love. She can transform into any being, tricking kids into thinking they're safe and cared for, waiting until she gains their full trust.
Her eyes are buttons, and she tells the children that if they let her sew buttons into their eyes as well, they can stay with her forever and play. If they agree, she does the procedure, eats their souls, and throws them away behind her mirror to sleep for eternity as spirits. If they do not, she slowly shows them the real her, and makes their life a living hell until she eats them up. She traps any child that enters the other world into a loop that they cannot escape.

Their eyes were replaced with buttons, and their souls were eaten away, leaving them being thrown away to suffer without true vision or life. Until they meet Coraline.
Coraline makes a deal with The Beldam that if she can find all 3 of the ghost children's eyes that they would be set free, as well as her parents (if she could find them.) She proceeds to find all three eyes just before the other world falls apart, and when she finds her parents and defeats The Beldam, their spirits are freed from her grasp forever. They are what helped Coraline escape the nightmare of the other world.

3. The Doll

Wybie finds a doll that almost exactly resembles Coraline and gives it to her as a gift, saying it used to belong to his grandma's sister, a ghost child they did not know had died in The Pink Palace. Coraline thinks it's beyond odd that the doll matches her appearance, but doesn't think much of it as she hangs out with the doll around her new home. Little did she know, it's button eyes that were sewn in by The Beldam herself watched everything that she did and felt, learning that she was unhappy with her parents.
The doll had been remade several times for each child before to spy on their lives so The Beldam could open the portal to the other world and trap them. And that's what inevitably happened to Coraline, later figuring it out when she talked to the ghost children. The doll was what decided if Coraline was going to meet her fate or not before The Beldam really came into play with her unfair ways.

Other Father's Song

Although this is straight from the movie and appears to not mean much, it's actually a clear warning of danger put into a bright cheery song. "Our eyes will be on Coraline," is an almost looked over warning from the other father that Coraline was always being watched through the eyes of the doll and The Beldam. It's the only song in the whole movie that's actual singing, and it shows how desperately the other father wants Coraline to escape, which is forced to be covered up by what we thought was a true happy tune.

Buttons are a reoccurring thing in the book and movie, to the point where it gets you really thinking. What kind of power do these buttons have that make them able to see like eyes? People often say the most unsettling thing about the story and imagery of Coraline is the button eyes, which I agree with, but it's also the thing that pulls the whole story together and makes it so unique.

As I've talked about in one of the main conflicts, the doll is also a reoccurring symbol. It was shown as how it was before The Beldam remade it, before the ghost girl died and then showed after, before Coraline even found out about the door as well. It's like The Beldam's second vision, or her way of seeing things she normally wouldn't be able to. It's unknown how much power this doll's eyes have, since it's seen the lives of 4 total kids, being remade each time.

The snow globe is undoubtedly the most hidden symbol in the story when it's actually the thing that means the most. This snow globe is where Coraline's parents were trapped during their deal, and the parents could be seen shivering, trying to escape or show Coraline they were there. When she grabs the snow globe after escaping The Beldam, she finds it broken on the mantel in the real world, it's insides dripping onto the floor where she was laying, confused. Shortly after, her parents come home through the front door, snow melting off their jackets like they weren't even freezing. When Coraline asks where they were, they just say they were out and yell at her for breaking the snow globe. So they didn't even know.
