In 1498, Christopher Columbus was the first person to reach Venezuela. Then, in 1499, a Spanish man named Alonso de Ojeda led an expedition to the area. The Spanish settled their first town in Venezuela in 1521. They began importing African slaves to the colony, but Venezuela was unimportant to the Spanish. Alonso named the place Venezuela, meaning little Venice, because of the little houses on stilts that he saw.

Many years ago, Venezuela was owned by the Indigenous Indians of the land. They mostly lived on the beaches, grasslands, and the tropical rain forests. There were three main groups of the Ancient civilizations: the Carib, the Arawak, and the Chibcha. They all knew how to farm to some degree, but it wasn't always necessary. Venezuela had so much wildlife around that they could always hunt. The Chibcha group was the most advanced. Even though they didn't have large cities, they had great farming techniques called "terrace farming".

The first efforts for independent rule began in 1749. However, it wasn't until 1810, when the Venezuelans took advantage of Napoleon's invasion of Spain and broke free of Spanish rule. The victory was short lived because Spanish forces took control again a year later. Venezuela was finally liberated in 1821 by Simon Bolivar and his army. At first, Venezuela became part of a country known as "Gran Colombia" which consisted of modern day Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela. This state was later dissolved into three countries and made Venezuela its own independent nation in 1830.

The US allowed the blockade to go through without any interference. The blockade quickly crippled the Venezuelan navy, but the president refused to give in. Instead, the president decided to agree to submit some of the claims to international arbitration. Germany rejected this, but the United States then decided to tell Germany to back down.
