Jim Crow Laws

In the Jim Crow sources that we red we saw that american were willing to attack, harass, and even kill if if would not change their way of life. In one of the sources it says “In the 1920's, the Klan moved in many states to dominate local and state politics” Groups like the KKK were being able to get positions in the government to continue hate crimes toward African Americans and other groups of people. But the american government saw how this affected its citizens and decided that Jim Crow laws such as separate but equal had no place in american and at the time it was a huge step forward to stopping racial injustices.

Another place we see change is in A raisin in the sun. In this book we see the African american experience in america. In this book an African american family, the younger family, is about to move into a new house in a white neighborhood when they are approached by a man who believes they should move in because they are black. “I want you to believe me when I tell you that race prejudice simply doesn’t enter into it. It is a matter of the people of Clybourne Park believing, rightly or wrongly, as I say, that for the happiness of all concerned that our Negro families are happier when they live in their own communities.” The neighborhood did not want them to move in but they persevered an moved in anyway Things like this would persuade the american government to pass the fair housing act which made it illegal to harass a person just because of their race.

During the Vietnam war the musician Jimi Hendrix sang the star spangled banner at a concert. He turned the the star spangled banner into a message towards the american government to let them know what the Vietnam war was doing to people. In the song There are parts that sound rubbish which are meant to represent the division between the american people. Another example is when you can hear planes falling and crashing which is meant to represent how America is trying to hide death with patriotism.

When the american government makes bad decisions in the eyes of its people, sometimes the people suffer, as seen in the things they carried we see the trauma someone can carry from war. American soldiers felt pressured into going into war. For example in the things they carried it says that “Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to. It was what had brought them to the war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams of glory or honor, just to avoid the blush of dishonor.”Things like this made over glorifying war stop and drove america away from wars that the people did not think we needed to be involved in.

The story of america is listening to its citizens and evolving the country for the better of the citizens. Throughout the history of america it citizens have fought and protested change when they do not agree with the way the country is going. Some examples would be the civil rights era, where things like Jim Crow laws were abolished due to the outrage of the american people. Another example could be when america entered the conflict in Vietnam some of the american people believed that being involved was wrong, so they made songs to show how they felt about the involvement in Vietnam.
