Inspired by the Zhao Lab at MIT and the Suo Group at Harvard, he currently does his own independent research at his high school working in the advanced and novel field of hydrogels mechanics, adhesion, and ionotronics in order to find ways to bridge materials and technology with medical challenges. His cumulative project is the creation of a smart hydrogel ostomy adhesive to detect and prevent ostomy leaks that cause painful dermatitis. His work won first place at the Orange County Science & Engineering Fair (OCSEF), was recognized by the ACS as the best project illustrating chemical principles, and qualified for as a finalist at the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair of 2020. Having attended two health hackathons, William continued his ventures with one of the projects called Nature’s Calling, trying to make a better world for ostomy patients.
