This does not directly act as a motivator, but instead can have the side effect of a greater or more focused motivation.

When Jon gets overwhelmed or angry, have him go to his ‘safe place’ (a teacher, counselor, coach, or designated helper) to help him calm down and refocus (In Jon’s case the coach). He will come back to class when he calms down and is ready to learn again. This will ensure that the class is a safe place to learn. When he has to go to the coach he might have to miss assignments. We can give him time to finish this work later (or take his work with him to the coach).

Let Jon work with the coach on football strategy, let him get an extra workout in the weight room, or let him get an extra practice in (school related distractions to encourage positive behavior).

Make sure you are flexible with the student. Minor issues should be looked over and positive behavior reinforced.

Keep assignments short so Jon has a better chance at succeeding and doesn’t get distracted.

Schedule them for later.

Alternatives to testing: Verbal test taking (ask Jon or have a computer voice ask the test questions and have him verbally give you the answer), Projects, (have Jon make a project about the information or material), and objective oriented testing (testing the student on their ability to complete an objective by the end of the year/semester/timeframe).

Make sure Jon’s academic classes are scheduled later in the day.

Math: Taking math tests is low stress for Jon, you can see the pride on his face when he does well. So math testing can stay the same.

Language Arts (reading and writing): Do not have the student read out loud, this causes anxiety.

Provide extra time on tests, because the student has trouble with reading/writing.

Pick out material for Jon that catches his interest (football, body building, and math) this way the student can fall in love with reading, before expecting him to dissect literature.

Social Studies: Mention to Jon that a certain body builder is from the place that is related to the material the class is discussing. Even if it’s for a split second, it will keep Jon engaged.

Science: Show the importance of science classes in relation to health (relating it to Jon’s passion for body buildings), also demonstrate how math is related to science. This will help keep Jon’s interest in science.

other subjects, if relevant (Physical Education, Art, and Music)

In weight class let Jon show his class how to do specific weight lifting techniques. Let Jon teach his own lesson as if he’s in charge.
