This character also is described as having an “ageless” face, therefore it is impossible to tell if he is either “thirty-five or fifty”.

Curley’s wife’s appearance reflects her personality. She is constantly flirting despite being married and that shows in the way she presents herself. She had “full rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up,” her “fingernails were red” and “her hair hung in little roll clusters, like sausages.” Also, “she wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the insteps of which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers.” All of these characteristics she tries to enhance and show about herself are meant to appeal to men. Throughout the play we can see her constantly try to seduce the men and make them feel attracted to her. She has an effect on them, as Lennie, George and Candy all describe her as “purty.” However, they all refuse to give into her charm, as she is Curley’s Wife, the boss’s son, and don’t want any trouble. They often describe her as a “jail bait,”and George even goes as far as saying he had never “seen no piece of jail bait worse than her.”

Candy is an old man who’s been working on the ranch for a long time. He is a “stoop-shouldered old man”, he keeps his shoulders down, lowering himself. This reflects his personality as Candy believes he is not useful due to his old age, he believes that as soon as he loses his job he will have nothing to offer to society. When he makes his first appearance he is wearing “blue jeans”, a common attire to all men who work at the ranch. When he first met Lennie and George these two characters realised that coming out from his sleeve was a “round stick- like wrist, but no hand”, this old man had injured himself while working at the ranch which caused him to lose his right hand.

For Lennie, rabbits represent an escape from his mental struggles. In them, he is able to find comfort, as he is able to take care of them, reversing the roles present in his everyday life. In his relationship with George, he is the one that is constantly being protected and taken care of. The rabbits can serve as a way for him to finally feel he is capable enough to take care of something. Lines Lennie says such as “an’ I’d take care of them” or “you jus’ let ‘em try to get the rabbits” show his enthusiasm, connection and protectiveness of these creatures, and it is immensely clear how important they are to him.

In addition, these may be a representation of freedom. They will be able to have rabbits when they own a farm, which is also when they will be free from work, becoming their own bosses. This is Lennie and George’s lifelong dream. Lennie constantly asks George to “tell (him) about how its gonna be” and they fantasize about the libery in going to a carnival: “we’d just go to her (...) we wouldn’t ask anybody if we could. “

Look officer, I don't really think this is necessary. It is no big deal, nothing really happened here. It was late at night and I couldn't find my wife, she is always running around and gets lost, you know? Anyways, I was in the house and when i saw she wasn't there i went out into the barn looking for her cause nobody had seen her around. When I got to the barn it was so damn dark, I couldn't see a thing. Anyways, I just started looking around and I got my hand stuck on some God damned machine or something. I began to scream and these guys that work at the barn found me and took me to see a doctor. Told you, no big deal, ok?

Well, it was an accident. I swear I ain't lying. You see, it was late at night and we had had a long day backing barley in the field so I was very tired. I stayed up late with the new pups at the barn, but I didn't do no harm to them I swear. I then came back here, to get some sleep for the new day tomorrow and everything was dark so i tripped with the table and fell on the floor. That's how I cut my face. My friend George says I need to be more careful, and I will be, but I fell and cut my face.

1-George turned to Lennie. "It ain't your fault," he said. "You
don't need to be scairt no more.
2-"It wasn't nothing," said Slim. "I would of had to drowned most of
'em anyways. No need to thank me about that."
3-Curley looked threateningly about the room. "Where the hell's Slim?"
4-Lennie and Candy nodded, and they were grinning with delight. "Don't
tell nobody," Lennie said to himself.
5-Candy nodded solemnly. "That's jus' what you done," he said.
"Right this morning when Curley first lit intil your fren', you
says, 'He better not fool with Lennie if he knows what's good for
'um.' That's jus' what you says to me."

This 5 lines represent the themes of friendship, dreams, companionship, freedom and fear. Firstly, it shows how Gorge's, Lennie's and Candy's dream of being free and owning their own land was making them hopeful and excited for their future. Also, it portrays the fear of the fight Lennie felt when he was being attacked by Curley, and how everyone stood up to him in order to defend and protect Lennie, showing the companionship there was between these men. Lastly, it connotes the strong friendship between Gorge and Lennie, where they both protected each other and stuck together no matter what.
