1st device noticed: Symbolism

Where we noticed it: pg 279 "There is an hour to come...when all of us shall cast aside our veils. Take it not amiss, beloved friend, if I wear this piece of crape til then."

How it worked/ What it added: It shows that the minister was trying to make a point in that everyone is wearing a veil, but he is the only one to acknowledge it by wearing a physical veil. These veils represent sin, and it is sin that stays with you until your veil is removed.

2nd device: Simple diction

Where we noticed it: pg 275 "At the close of the services, the people hurried out with indecorous confusion, eager to communicate their pent-up amazement, and conscious of lighter spirits the moment they lost sight of the black veil."

How it worked/What it added: The way in which the writer speaks adds to this kind of mundane tone that is set up. Nothing is described outlandishly and it's all very simple, unlike all of the other pieces we've read where there was some kind of grand course of events described with such complex diction.

It could be used as an appeal to ethos too.

2nd Device Noticed: Symbolism

Where we noticed it: P. 278 "... the symbol of a fearful secret between him and them . Were the veil but cast aside..."

How it worked / What it added: I think it adds to the mood of the story. It gives the veil a greater meaning the just being a veil. It adds fear to the story.
