The setting in the beginning of the book was very vivid, and I could see what the author was just using words to describe. The book states "The pines, the huge umbrellas of the elms, and the shaggy cedars were the tallest thing in the world.." I would imagine the great heights of the marvelous trees.

The adobe houses were made out of clay and dried in the sun. Multiple Mexican families would live in just one adobe house. There were about 40 houses total in the small village with the insides built to the residents advantage by using space efficiently. The text states " It was the roof that gave space and lift to the single room that served as kitchen, bedroom, parlor, pantry, closet, storeroom, and tool shed." As it is clearly stated in the text, the residents use the efficiency of this handmade roof for many interchangeable rooms. As it is shown in the picture, the roof is made out of grass and tree leaves that allows for any easy and accessible change in scenery.

This tree is the "brave" tree that withstands the harsh tides of the ocean weathering it down to its core. The tree is sacred to the citizens of the street of Jalcocotan, providing shade and driftwood to the people. Not only did it supply these physical provisions, but the tree's scars from the damage of the ocean gave them hope. The book states "On the edge of the pond, at the far side, there was an enormous walnut tree, standing like an open umbrella whose ribs extended half way across the still water of the pool. The scars on the trunk of the mighty bole showed where the arroyo had bashed it during the storms of former years." The tree stands strong against all odds just like the people should. In some way, the tree is teaching the citizens a lesson.
