Focus on errors rather than on mistakes

1) I would rather focus on my students' errors rather than on mistakes as errors occur due to a lack of knowledge from the students. Also, when students are alerted of their errors, they may not possess the necessary skills to solve the particular error and would need guidance from teachers.

2) I would focus on factual errors that occur due to students' inability to perform with accuracy which can be tied in to mathematics like mechanical sums and students' careless mistakes.

3) Next, I would also focus on transformation and procedural errors as students may be aware of the theories involved in English and Maths but they not be able to transfer their knowledge to written work. So, I would have to provide certain strategies to guide them to transfer what they have learnt to their daily written work.

4) Finally, misconception error is something that I have been doing especially for mathematics like some of my students view improper fractions and mixed numbers as the same concept. So, I would find meaningful activities and explain to them the difference between these two concepts.

Focusing on a Particular error

I used to mark all of my pupils' essays in detail before and that took up alot of time as well as burned me out very quickly. I dreaded getting a class of essays to mark. Now onwards, I am going to focus on a particular error for the whole class when i mark their essays.

For example, if im teaching sentence fluency, i will concentrate on that and not organization, etc. If i am teaching various ways to begin an essay, i will mark their introduction in detail and ignore other errors even if obvious. this way, it makes it easier for me to mark and pupils can focus on just that error and improve themselves in that area.

I would be focussing on identifying patterns in students error as this can help me to determine whether I should address it as a global or target errors.

2. If it is a Global error, I will reteach the topic using another teaching method so that it saves time and yet achieve greater outreach to students having difficulties in the same topic whether in math or science.

3. If it involves a small group, I will use targeted area to feedback to students to achieve improvement in their performance.
