It's natural to not want to sit down and listen when you're under the age of 20. Let's not discourage their natural instincts by forcing them to sit down & be quiet for innumerable hours each day. We have cut physical activity to a pitifully sad low within our schools. If at all possible, try to add more physical activity, not just for competition/athletics, but for health! Please do keep the brain breaks! Let's look at ways to further integrate illustrations of the importance of healthy behaviors into all programs. Think about it this way: even a business owner needs healthy employees in order to have a successful business. For that matter, the positive health of the teachers is crucial to the success of the school. It's all relevant.
Healthy minds can focus, get better grades, be more productive, have less accidents & less absenteeism, etc. Our country's future, and each of our individual futures, hinge upon the health of our children. As an expansion of that idea, I think those same high school students would also benefit from a program that allows them to "lead by example" through service learning programs. Maybe some sort of mentoring programs utilizing high school students within the middle & elementary schools?  Reading to the younger kids, helping with science projects, or drama club with older kids. The middle & elementary students then tell their parents about the awesome high school students who read them this or helped them with that. As a result, those younger children would likely want to emulate their older peers by eventually mentoring in similar ways when they are able. The high school students gain invaluable experiences that will likely foster their drive to volunteer in other aspects of their lives. Very little cost to something like this (I presume) and all students involved gain something positive. Studies have shown that detention does not work but Yoga and teaching meditation techniques can deescalate anger issues and make students more mindful in dealing with life issues. It is difficult in this day and time to be a child/teenager/young adult and to understand how to react to the issues of the day.
