1. something really memorable for me was that i really saw the importance of non verbal cues. i used to think what we say matters more than our non verbal cues (how we stand/ facial expressions) but after watching the video and how the presenter brought it across, i was really in awed and persuaded that non verbal cues is really important in our day to day communications with others because it might cause someone to misunderstand and cause things like miscommunication. our non verbal cues also show people we are unhappy/ bored/ angry etc.

2. i will apply the fact that face to face communication is better than communicating online as they minimise miscommunications and how we can bring our point across properly. also, when i talk to others, i will manage my non verbal cues properly so people won’t think i’m angry or impatient.

1. A memorable element I’ve learnt from the talk is giving your 100% attention to whoever you are meeting, be it business meeting or gathering with friends. It is important to respect the other party’s time as they took out their time and effort to meet you, hence, we should not waste their time as it is disrespectful.

2. In future i would set aside my phone when I’m out with my friends to give them my 100% attention. I will also immediately take off my earpiece when I meet them as I always have a habit to forget to take them off when I am around them around. I will also remember this and apply it to when I start going out to the working force and have a meeting, I will commit my 100% attention to whoever is participating in the meeting.

It is really important to have non-verbal cues when we are having a communication, especially in a meeting. Different physical appearance, pitch, etc, might bring across different meaning to what the person is trying to say as it brings about different intention.

2. i will think of how i want to say first and use non-verbal cues more often by having face-to-face conversation, to avoid misinterpretation.

1. A memorable experience I have learnt from the talk is that giving your fullest attention to some who is speaking whether it is business meeting or a one to one talk with friends or family is that you are showing respect and attentive to what the other person is saying. Non verbal cues such as posture and the way you carry yourself is also important during communication because it will determine whether you are interested or paying attention to what the person is saying as it may reflect on what we feel during the conversation. They could have interpret it as uninterested and lack of professionalism.

2. I will make sure that I give my fullest attention to the person who is speaking as a form of respect. I will also make sure that I present my self well whether it for presentation or speaking to a friend to show that I am paying attention and interested.

This will not only give the speaker confidence but i will also be able to understand what they are saying. The person has taken their time off to come down and speak to me.

1. One thing I have learnt is to respect others’ culture when we are in a different environment. When we find ourselves in an foreign country, I believe that we should have the courtesy to learn about the unique culture existing there so we would not embarrass ourselves and extinguish the reputation we have in representation of our home country. In the talk, I seen videos that displayed misunderstandings happening because of the different cultures and in the end one party would end up not knowing how to clean up the mess. In addition, Ms Jaenani mentioned when she went to London, she was walk into the house with her shoes on unlike what we do in Singapore. If we actually do it in Singapore, it will be disrespectful for us instead of being among the norm. Hence the understanding and respect for another form of culture is very important as it shapes the impression people have on us.

2. I would apply what I have learnt from the talk when I actually have opportunities to travel overseas or even within Singapore, when I'm visiting my friends, who happen to belong to another race. When l actually get to go overseas, I would spend some time to do a bit of research about the country’s culture and try to practice them so I would not offend any of the locals there. For example, in Western countries, they hug each other when they greet each other. Even in Singapore, we still have multiple races living together and we all have different practices and cultures. Hence when we visit our Malay or Indian friends, we should learn to not offer items like pork or beef and to not use our left hands to eat. This not only show that we respect others’ culture, it also leaves a good impression with other people.

1. Something memorable for me was that Ms Jaenani mentioned about the use of phones during meetings. Meetings will be more effective if we put our phones away and listen attentively to different sharings, even if we have to reply to important messages. It is only courteous and respectful to pay full attention to speakers and contribute ideas during the meeting.

2. I’ve learnt to be more aware of my non-verbal cues that i’m bringing across to another person. Non-verbal cues is a way someone else can tell your emotions and whether you are interested in what they are trying to convey to you.

1. Communication is very important and we should always take note of the non-verbal cues that comes along with it as well. When communicating via online platforms, there might be misunderstandings and what we want to say to the other person might not be properly relayed. Thus, communicating face-to-face is still the best choice as we can get to see the other person’s non-verbal cues.

2. Instead of communicating via online, I would communicate more face-to-face with others, especially for the important things. In this way, I would then be able to see their non-verbal cues instead of having to guess how they are actually feeling through texts as through texts, it is very hard for us to truly understand.

For example, people in London are able to walk into their houses with their shoes on while we tend to take out our shoes upon entering someone else’s house. In France, people greet by saying ‘Bonjour’ followed by a kiss on the cheek while we just greet by saying hello.

2) I would apply the face-to-face communication. Talking online is better, however, miscommunications may arise as you do not know what the person you are talking to feels and their actual reaction. For face-to-face communication, you’ll be able to read their facial features and their actions.
