I think some great advice for any course is to try finding enjoyment out of the course and also to take immense pride in your work. When it comes to this class I had very little interest in music notation or analysis however I love history and stories so I tied that into the analysis and notation. When it comes to taking pride in your work I like to make every assignment a work of art. Even in my labs my friends will make fun of me because I spend 5 minutes picking the theme of my graph. Small things like this help shape your mindset into finding joy out of task. This helps a lot because tasks that you used to pray would just end become something you can cruise through.

If you do that the content will be easy and you will have a good time. Also, reflect on the material and compare it to yourself. Find the similarities in both the assignments and your life. If your take the content to heart, more than the vocab, but really stopping to appricate music, you will be better off because of it. Make this class your own and you will prosper.

That is something I really appreciated that Professor Coder did, was make and publish Quizlets to study from before tests. Best of luck!

After this course you will never listen to music or watch movies the same way again. You will always be noticing new musical themes in movies and realizing how different musical choices effect you. Your eyes are going to be opened to a whole new world; the world of music. It can be confusing at times but I know that with persistence you will be able to figure it out. (Professor Coder is also GREAT at explaining some of the more complicated terms and ideas.) My advice to you would be to just embrace it; sometimes the work may seem boring but if you read each article and watch each lesson pretending like its the most interesting thing ever it will become just that. And not only will you learn a little more about this musical world that surrounds us all but you will also have little fun doing so! Good luck and remember YOU GOT THIS!!!!

With many smiles
Jaclyn Little :)

Take advantage of the many resources and materials you are provided with. You can gain a deeper appreciation for music from this course. You've got to put the work in, but it can be fun! Try to get the musical terminology down early on, and familiarize yourself with the music selections in the book and modules. Don't skip out on any early music analysis assignments. Those will be good practice for your larger ones.

I have taken 18 units during the Fall and Spring Semesters and have had some scary experiences with deadlines; however most to all professors are very understanding and have been in our place at one point in time. Professor Coder is an awesome person and I am sure her knowledge extends beyond being our online proctor, so never feel you cannot communicate with others in your class, and especially your educator. Remember to stay on track! derailment is not an easy fix though remedies are available.

I know pretty much everyone is gonna say something about managing time and not procrastinating so I'm gonna say something that isn't that. I think that a good way to get through this course and similar ones is first to obviously learn the material, but with the assignments simply know what they entail and when they are due. As someone who had several difficult STEM classes along with this one, you sometimes need to have a triage system to get all of the work done. I'm not saying that you should ignore any work but if you have at least an idea of what you need to get done then you can plan when to start it and then maybe focus on other classes before then.

So my biggest advice is that you will get where you want to go, you will achieve what you want to achieve, just take a step back and remind yourself that you have your studies to look our for but more that that, you have yourself to look out for. Breathe when necessary, cry when necessary and watch Netflix when necessary. We all need that! Manage your time with your goal in mind and grind till the time you want to. Take a break and grind. You can do this. You can overcome challenges in any class. Good luck guys and have a great year ahead.

The class is interesting in the blend of music history and appreciation of the art. It becomes harder to understand and enjoy the material if you cram the module and contents in one weekend or day. It'll make you not have fun learning and doing the projects. I found it helpful to spread my learning throughout the weekdays by listening to the audio content while reading or doing something else. The listening part helped me not get frustrated at looking through all the resonance readings and videos in one or two study sessions. That helped me review the contents on Fridays and take the quizzes/exams. And if life is getting too hectic, don't be afraid to message the professor for help. She's fast with her responses and reasonable with extensions. :>
