"We are Family" by Michael J. Burt shows through his poem what it means to be a family. In the first lines, he writes, "we are family, although we do not resemble " He starts off the poem with that family does not have to be a blood-related relationship with others but it is a warm relationship. The poem continues on stating the differences the two people have, but they are still a family no matter what. Family isn't about the similarities of something, but something deeper.

Recently France changed their nation school forms into 'parent 1' and 'parent 2' from the standard "Mother" and "Father." This shows that the nation has somewhat accepted that there are different families in the world and that not every family is a mother and father basis. They expanded what is considered a family to single-parent families, same-sex families, and guardians. Simple changes to the forms change what is family to many people and this is a lot more inclusive than mother and father.

Provoost talks about her talking with children who are part of a family that used a sperm donor. Using the illustration of an apple tree she gave and asked what they thought of the sperm donor, one of them said "I won't put this one up there with the others. He's not part of my family. But I will not put him on the ground. That's too cold and too hard. I think he should be in the trunk because he made my family possible." Sometimes family is not about the warm relationships within and the caring of children, but it can be those who created the family. Sometimes they are the shadow of the family that they created. Children's perspective on family is broad and doesn't fail to include everyone who is a part of it.

Marie Antoinette is sometimes known for her selfishness and also had a unique family created. For a royal family, it is natural to have a bloodline connection as their only family because only those part of the bloodline could continue the throne. Marie Antoinette didn't worry about that fact and adopted children. The family she created was a healthy one in which every child felt as if they were a part of the family from the beginning. She paid for their living, and education and gave them unconditional love. Even if she was a royal person she did not set a line between the royal family and other family, but accepted the children as who they are.

Finding Chika takes place first in Haiti in 2010, when Chika. She is born three days after the Haitian Earthquake which destroyed many homes of people and broke many families up. Chika's story about her real family is that most of her family died after the earthquake and she was sent to an orphanage. The orphanage was kind of her new family in Haiti as she bonded with the other children that went through the same situation. The other family she has is with Mitch Albom and his wife when they adopt her and go to Detroit, New Jersey in 2015. At Detroit, they went through the process of creating a family, which Albom was not familiar with.

The photograph of two gay men kissing was taken in 1983. A typical family is known to have a woman, a man, and a child, but here there are two dads. In 1983 it was still not accepted socially in the United States of gay families and gay marriages. But this couple shows that they can be a family without being the standard family definition and not gaining the public "family" recognition.
