Going back to 1800 when Singapore was still a port city and where the hawker centres origins all began. Back then Singapore attracted many different migrants to work as hard labourers, merchants and cooks who brought with them their comfort food that they grew up with. Many immigrants saw street hawking a good way to earn a living for themselves hence they started to fill the streets, serving dishes that they were most familiar with. And with just three cents, anyone can afford a sumptuous meal of three to four dishes, served up at a moment’s notice. It was so popular that on the same street you could easily find the different flavours from each part of Asia. And this is the history and the beginning of hawker centres

My favourite hawker centre

My favourite hawker centre is the Alexandra village food centre. With a quick search of the most famous avocado shake in Singapore this is the first hawker centre that will turn up. One of the reasons of why this is my favourite hawker centre is because my favourite dish and drink is there which is the claypot laksa and the avocado shake. Another reason is that this hawker centre is just like a 5 minute drive away from my house, though it may seems far but is actually quite near.

There are many well know hawker centres in Singapore and all of them has a signature dish that everyone would love to try. Some of the most famous hawker centre with their signature dish is Maxwell Food Centre and their signature dish of the Hainanese chicken rice, Amoy Street Food Centre and their Hong Kee beef Noodles, Newtown Food Centre and their BBQ & Seafood and etc.

It is important to preserve the hawker culture as it holds historical history. The hawker also brings our people together with closer relationships. Playing a part to reserve our hawker culture can be as simple as going to the hawker centre and buying the stalls food, another way is to promote the hawker centre which is like sharing your experience with your friends or having your own videos or livestreams your hawker centre and asking them to visit and try the different hawker food there.
