What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? Kenneth Le

The tone of the poem "A Noiseless Patient Spider" appears to be sad and lonely. "I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated, Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding." This line illustrates the spider being isolated and it shoots out webs to expand. The spider represents the author being alone and the shooting of the webs shows how he is attempting to reach new people and ideas. Therefore, this poem emits a lonely and sad atmosphere.

Analysis #1: Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem? - Vi Nguyen

In “A Noiseless Patient Spider'' by Walt Whitman, the spider is the symbol. In the poem, it says, “Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding, It launch’d forth filament, filament, out of itself, (Whitman, 540).” Throughout the poem, the spider is this lonely creature that is trying to build its web even bigger. The spider represents the urge to expand knowledge, connections, and ideas. In the context of the poem, Whitman wanted to create a symbol that represented his desires to learn more about the world, news ideas, and meeting new people. So, the spider starting off as this lonely creature would eventually grow as it continues to weave its web.

What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea. - Vi Nguyen

The central idea/theme of this poem is about being lonely while yearning for connections. One of the lines in the poem says, “Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space, ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them (Whitman 540).” In the poem, there are comparisons to loneliness and being isolated. The poet uses these themes to portray a creature’s feelings and thoughts of being lonely.

What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem? Kenneth Le

The poem possesses figurative languages such as repetition and personification. "A noiseless patient spider,
I mark’d where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark’d how to explore the vacant vast surrounding." This line shows personification because it gives the spider human characteristics. The patient spider represents the poet, stating that he is patient while exploring his vast surroundings in search of friends. "It launch’d forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself." Repetition is present in this line, emphasizing the spider shooting out its webs. Figurative language was used in this poem to include a deeper meaning and to emphasize on certain parts.
