She really tries to understand people and help them in their lives. In the book she talked to Ponyboy about his life and how on the inside, they both liked to watch sunsets. Cherry said, " I used to watch them, too, before I got so busy..."(35) When Cherry first met Ponyboy, she was interested in his family and was very nice to Ponyboy and Johnny. The book shows that she is the type of person that cares deeply about her friends. She helped out Ponyboy and Johnny when the cops were after them, which shows that she cares about friends. When Bob's gang came around to get Cherry she tried to protect Johnny and Ponyboy from them. On her personality quiz, Cherry got 63% assertive. This was showed when she actually talked to the greasers when she was a soc. She was not afraid to speak up and have fun with Ponyboy and his crew either. Cherry Spoke up to Dally on when she said, "That might cool you off, greaser. When Cherry first met the three Greasers, she and her friend didn't turn away and instead, had fun with them. Then, when Bob came to find her as Ponyboy was taking her home, she stopped a fight between the Socs and the Greasers. She is also very good at knowing what people are like before she gets to know them. When Two Bit came over and he was either drunk or not, Cherry played along with his and going along with his personality when she didn't even know him. Next, as she talked to Ponyboy in the popcorn line and said, "Johnny, he's been hurt bad sometime, hasn't he?...Hurt and scared."(28) And she assumed that even when she knew Johnny for about an hour or so. Those are some of Cherry's strengths. 
Weaknesses
Cherry doesn't agree with what the Socs do all the time but feels pressured to do what they do and hang out with them. Bob can be a jerk a lot of the times and Cherry always defends him. On page 110 Cherry said, " Bob was something special. He wasn't just any boy.  He had something that made people follow him, something that marked him different,  maybe a little better, than the crowd." And she was defending him, when earlier in the book, she was scared of him and his friends. She dressed preppy and like the Socs when she liked the greasers just as much and was not afraid to hang out with them. Cherry sees the good in everybody but that makes her blind sometimes. When Bob and his gang came to beat up Johnny and Ponyboy, when Cherry later found out, she still hang out with the group after what they did. On page 33 Cherry talked about when she was talking with her friends, she didn't mean half the stuff she was saying.

She hates fights, which is clearly stated on page 40 when Cherry said, "I can't stand fights... I can't stand them..." The Greasers and the Socs would have rumbles and fights, so Cherry often tried to stop them which was a big part of her motivation. If she could stop them, she would. Another part of the story that leads on to Cherry's motivation is when she almost got mad at Ponyboy when she argued, "You don't believe in playing rough or anything, do you?"(27). Cherry seemed almost astonished after she met "sweet" Ponyboy and Johnny and then they said that they liked a good and fair fight. Cherry made sure that whenever the Socs and Greasers were around each other, they didn't get into fights. She was kind of into Ponyboy and Johnny because they were nice and not rough. She is a character that is a great leader and interacts with anyone and everyone. IF someone was being rude or disruptive to her friends, she would let them know, like when she made Dally go away when he tried to talk to Cherry and her friends. She exclaimed, "Take your feet off my chair and shut your trap."(19) when Dally was bugging her and Marcia when she was with the socs and when she was with the greasers she would do the same like on page 110 when se tried to help Ponyboy. Her personality stayed loyal to both the Socs and the Greasers the whole way through. At times Cherry helped out the Greasers more than the Socs like when she acted as a "spy" as the police hunted down Ponyboy and Johnny. She favored the Socs more when she said, "...but Bob was something special." (110) And she hung out with he Socs when they weren't her type. E. Hilton wrote Cherry as a character that has two different sides to her which means she is a round character. Cherry told Ponyboy that she loves sunsets (page 35) and she kept on saying how Ponyboy was such a nice kid for being a greaser with Johnny. On the other hand she hung out with lots of socs and dressed all preppy and nice. A third side to her, which contrasts her goody-two-shoes side, is that she often fell in love with trouble makers and the naughty boys. She fell in love with Bob and he often go drunk and hung out with people who made bad decision which made him do bad things. The book also gives a large hint that Cherry would have fallen in love with Dally, who made lots and lots of bad decisions. Johnny and Ponyboy try to run away from their life and in their life was an immense amount of anger. The church was creepy and both Ponyboy and Johnny did not like it at all. “It was a small church, real old and spooky and spiderwebby. It gave me the creeps.”(57) Ponyboy thought. No matter where they ran to, the two could not get into a good place. When the church burnt down it symbolizes how Ponyboy and Johnny kept their anger contained. The church burnt down right when they were getting sick of the old place and mad at life. If the church didn’t burn  they would have never gotten out of the church and they would have gotten mad at eachother. People would have also not have realized that the two are not bad people. The church and the fire was a symbol for the anger in the Outsiders.

If the east and west side did not exist, then there wouldn’t be a story. Ponyboy was explaining who lived on what side and he said “We get jumped by the Socs. I'm not sure how you spell it, but it's the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids” (4). He was indicating that only the people who went to the other side had nothing better to do. Since the rich kids lived on the West side, the East side did not have a great community except for their gangs which made the greasers tough and willing to fight the Socs. With the differences between the two, conflict came about which formed the story.
