During the 1950s, the Korean War was still ongoing. The basis of the Korean War was the spread of communism. North Korea wanted to spread its ideals and government to South Korea, while South Korea wanted to stop the spread of North Korea's ideals and conquest. Many solders dead during the war.
In this article, "Towns Fall to North Invaders", the author writes about how a few pilots died from suicide. They were supposed to bomb a few towns in North Korea. However, the mission didn't goes as planned. So, instead of aborting the mission, the few pilots decided to dive bomb into the towns and killed themselves.
The article is implying that the Korean War has messed up the minds of the people fighting in it. The pilots have lost their sense of sanity and decided to die for a cause they, individually, aren't involved in.

Major theme connection: Withdrawal from war
The article goes over the reasons for the withdrawal of troops from Egypt. This relates by going over a loss and an overall waste of time, the same way that Yossarian feels towards his war. The article also goes over the air support of the event, which is the same division that Yossarian serves under.

“He had decided to live forever or die in the attempt, and his only mission each time he went up was to come down alive.” (Heller 29). This quote ties into the theme of death and war, and shows how apathetically Yossarian acts towards the war effort. He doesn’t care about the objective, or the enemy, but merely prioritizes his own safety. Thus, when he goes on missions he simply tries not to die, ignoring that there is a goal to complete during his flights, while other soldiers like Havermeyer never miss their targets.

“I’d be the last colonel in the world to order you to go to that U.S.O. show and have a good time, but I want every one of you who isn’t sick enough to be in a hospital to go to that U.S.O. show right now and have a good time, and that’s an order!” (Heller 28). This quote ties into the theme of the illusion of choice as well as how dysfunctional the power and hierarchy is. The illusion that the men have a choice to attend, followed by the contradictory statement that they’re ordered to attend, shows how confused and muddled the ideas of power are, yet also shows how this power must be listened to, and that the soldiers have no choice but to follow the orders of the man who is in charge.

“Group Headquarters was alarmed, for there was no telling what people might find out once they felt free to ask whatever questions they wanted to” (Heller 35). This quote ties into the theme of censorship and suppression of freedoms, showing how HQ is worried that the soldiers are asking too many questions and may receive information. By regulating the information they know, it’s easier to keep the soldiers relatively obedient and avoid uncomfortable questioning about the motives of the war or it’s consequence. This quote shows the corruption of the power as it takes away people’s personal freedoms to promote the war effort, and ties into the novels antiwar sentiment .

“War is nothing more than organized insanity. That's why crazy and unexpected tactics work most of the time. When they don't, we won't live to tell about it” (Carlin). The quote is about how war is a crazy time in one's life and in every war there is a lot of insanity about who will win and who will lose or what to do if the organized plan fails and all heck breaks loose. This connects to the theme because of how the insanity of war and the fear of death in every soldier in the book is a driving point in the story and tells the theme of war

“Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you” (Heller). What the quote means is how a lot of soldiers are paranoid about any war and how it affect each and any one of them during the war and their paranoia cause them to lose their sanity and feel like someone is always after them. It connects to the theme of insanity of war because it shows an after effect of a battle or a war that can cause any soldier to be left with doubt or paranoia.

"Live forever or die in the attempt" (Heller). What the quote means is how any death in the act of war is a trigger for anyone to lose their nerve. Any soldier is haunted by the fact that death is a factor in any war. It connects to the theme of the insanity of war because it shows how death can be a driving factor for any soldier to quit the army or to run away from the army because of the fear of death can lead any soldier to insanity both in war or out of the war.
