Madeira is also called the “Island of Eternal Spring” because of its mild weather all year round. The island is full of green mountains, waterfalls, and the unique Laurissilva Forest, which is protected by UNESCO. 🌿

A fun fact: Madeira has some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe, and from the coast you can often see dolphins swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. 🐬 This makes Porto Moniz the perfect place for outdoor activities, learning in nature, and enjoying an unforgettable experience together.

👉 Please note: this is not a resort, but a simple and functional youth house with basic and common conditions (as you can already see in the pictures). The spirit is about living together, sharing responsibilities, and making it feel like home for everyone.

• 🧹 There will be no cleaning staff, participants are fully responsible for keeping the house clean and well-maintained.

• 🍽️ Everyone must clean up after themselves in all areas of the house (kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, and common spaces).

This time, we’ll help remove invasive exotic plants that threaten Madeira’s native ecosystems, such as:

- Hedychium gardnerianum (Bananilha – from the Himalayas)

- Ageratina adenophora (Abundância – from Mexico)

- Tradescantia fluminensis (Erva-da-fortuna – from Brazil)

- …and others, along the beautiful Chão da Ribeira – Paúl da Serra trail 🌄

We’ll explore the Vereda do Pico trail in Porto Moniz, a short but spectacular route that leads to the Caminho do Pico Viewpoint, one of the most breathtaking spots on the city. 📸

• Total distance: approx. 8 km

• Duration: ~4 hours (2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.)

• Type: Circular route — starts and ends at Porto Moniz Church

• Difficulty: Moderate — mix of uphill paths, levada (flat irrigation channel walk), and downhill stretches

• Main terrain: cobblestone path, agricultural roads, forested trails

• Scenery: ocean views, vineyards, agricultural terraces, local villages

🗺️ Route Description (Simplified)

1. Start: Porto Moniz Church

2. Caminho da Ladeira (Hillside Path):

   • Gentle uphill section toward Lamaceiros Church

   • Passes by the whale lookout point and Verdelho wine vineyards

3. Levada Grande:

   • Flat stretch following the ancient irrigation channel, surrounded by farmland

4. Vereda do Pico / Caminho Real 23 (Descent):

   • Historical route back toward the starting point

   • Offers stunning sea views and open landscapes

5. End: Return to Porto Moniz Church

🇵🇹 Intercultural Afternoon by Ramifica

Ramifica will host a Portuguese intercultural event, where local people will join to share Madeira’s culture and traditions.

You’ll enjoy local food, music, and a live performance by a traditional folklore group with dances and instruments. 🎻💃

It’s not about perfect presentations, it’s about sharing who you are, learning from others, and building connections that cross borders. 🤝🌍

Every dish, song, and smile helps us grow closer and understand one another a little better.

Afternoon Session: After lunch, we did a “Speed Friending” activity to get to know each other better. Most of the questions were based on the OAE method. Then we moved on to “Mission Impossible,” the first teamwork activity of the week. Participants had 12 tasks to complete in one hour, and with good teamwork and communication, all tasks were finished successfully. After presenting the results, we introduced Padlet as a tool for sharing and reflection. Together, we agreed on our ground rules, making sure everyone’s opinion was included. We ended the session with a short reflection.

Evening Activity: In the evening, participants joined the “Me & My Organisation” session, where they shared how they got involved in Erasmus and their organisations.

From the first day, the group showed great teamwork and a positive atmosphere.

Afternoon Session:
We started the afternoon by coming together to make a short plan for the upcoming cultural night. Then, we moved on to a short discussion on the topic of trust, where participants reflected on a few individual questions.

After that, we went outside for some outdoor activities. As an energiser, we played the “Building Up a Statue” game, where groups of 2–4 people used their bodies to represent different objects. It was a fun and creative activity that made everyone laugh and collaborate.

Next, we continued with the first stage of our team-building activities — the “Ball Carrying” game. Participants worked in pairs to carry a ball without using their hands, competing in two teams. Afterward, we had a short reflection on some key moments from the game, focusing on teamwork and communication.

We then moved on to the “Trust Walk” activity. Participants worked in pairs — one person was blindfolded while the other acted as a guide, leading them through a short walk. After the activity, everyone shared their experiences and thoughts during a reflection. It turned out to be a meaningful and effective exercise.

To close the day, we held a general reflection session about the day’s activities.

Evening Activity:
In the evening, we enjoyed the cultural night of Estonia, Poland, France, and the Netherlands. Participants presented their traditional food and shared interesting aspects of their cultures, creating a warm and lively atmosphere.

Participants work in small groups to identify key principles for the group’s behaviour and cooperation during the hike.
Each group lists some rules that will help ensure:

• Physical and emotional safety of all participants,

• Respect for nature, local environment, and communities,

• Positive and supportive group dynamics,

• Effective communication and inclusion within the team,

• Sustainable behaviour and minimal environmental impact.

Afternoon activity: after the lunch break the session was aimed at leadership skills and communication. We kicked off with the storytelling about history of outdoor adventure education. Then we discussed skills a facilitator needs and three aspects asked from a leader: task management, group creation and development and individual development of participants. We paid extra attention to group forming and stages of its functioning. After that we learnt new information about management styles and shared it in a role play way, followed by discussion and questions-answers session. The aim was to analyze your own management style and see what matches different situations. Case study method was applied for doing that and it provoked insightful discussion. We reflected on that productive day and shared outcomes.

Evening: today International night was provided by Serbia, Slovenia and Türkiye and to tell more we even had a chance to learn about origin of one of the participants which is Iraq. We tried national food, listened and sang different songs and learnt Serbian and Turkish dances. It was full of laugh, new knowledge and interesting conversations.

The logistics team prepared a checklist of all personal and common essentials required for the expedition, while the activity team planned the energisers, reflections, and activities to be done during the hike.

Afternoon Session:
After lunch, we visited the Porto Moniz Aquarium, where participants had the chance to explore local marine life. Later, we went together to Praia do Seixal, the beautiful black sand beach, and spent some relaxing and enjoyable time there as a group.

Evening:
After dinner, participants spent their free time in mixed groups, enjoying the evening in a social atmosphere.

Hike:

Once our tour guide joined us, we began the hike with a short introduction to the route. The hike lasted approximately 4 to 4.5 hours, covering about 8 km on a circular trail starting and ending at Porto Moniz Church. The route included gentle uphill paths, a flat section along the Levada Grande, and a scenic descent through Caminho Real 23, offering views of the ocean, vineyards, and local villages. The trail combined cobblestone paths, forested tracks, and agricultural roads, providing a moderate level of difficulty and beautiful scenery throughout.

At the final point, we gathered for a short reflection and a mindful closing activity to end the hike peacefully.

Evening:

After dinner, participants organized a karaoke night, enjoying music, relaxation, and a fun evening together.

In the afternoon, we focused on follow-up procedures and the development of our own outdoor adventure education activities. Each national team worked collaboratively to design a plan and then presented it to the group. The following round of questions and suggestions made the discussion both fruitful and inspiring.

We wrapped up the day with a group reflection on the overall experience, feeling energized and ready for the final day of the training course. After dinner, we gathered once more for a storytelling evening, where everyone shared personal stories from their travels, projects, and professional experiences. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, and it reminded us of the many things that unite us
