30 Days Socratic Seminar by Jody Mottern

While you are part of the "outer circle," post your responses to the questions on this Padlet. You are silent but will be recording your ideas in our discussion Padlet.

When did it seem like the inner circle "sparked" ? How did that happen?
What idea were you dying to respond to?What would you have said?
What was the single most important idea discussed? Why?
What was the single most important idea that didn't get discussed? Why?
What could have made the discussion even more constructive?

I feel like it would be harder to have a family when making minimum wage. From what we’ve seen in the video, you quickly spend a lot of money on kids and it takes away a lot of your earnings. It also causes arguments between money and spending. It would be a lot harder to save money for things such as rent, bills and just other things you’re really need to get by.

One thing that comes up a lot is the tension within a minimum wage household and how more residents affect it. When there’s more people more money is being made but there are more costs and argument. For example one person in the inner circle mentioned how when the couple had their kids over they began arguing more over things that they weren’t (two buns).

Another way minimum wage keeps people in poverty is the fact that minimum wage jobs are typically more laborious and increase the chances of sustaining and injury. Pair that with the lack of insurance and the medical bills will be through the roof.

A question that I really want to find the answer to is how to get out of a minimum wage job. What’s the secret? It could be that you need to go back to college but that would take years of saving up and saving up is almost impossible when working a minimum wage job. Honestly, I feel like the best way to get out of a minimum wage life would be to make outside connections that will help you out. An example of this would be making friends that can help you find a place to live or sometimes give you dinner. Another example would be connecting with a local church which would give you many benefits such as caring people that will help you out financially and maybe donate things to you. Something that could have made the discussion more constructive would be that a lot of questions were being asked but not as many were being answered.
