In only one day, Hercules boasted he would clean the filthy stables if Augeas would give him a tenth of his cattle. Astonished, Augeas promised that he would.  As a witness, Hercules brought Augeas's own son along to verify task completion. To start, Hercules tore a gaping opening in the wall of the cattle-yard. Next, on the opposite side of the yard, he made another opening in the wall. Then, he dug wide channels to two rivers which flowed nearby. The rivers rushed through the stables, flushing them out, and all the excrement flowed out the hole in the wall on other side of the yard. When King Augeas learned that Eurystheus really ordered the task, he withheld Hercules’ reward money. Moreover, he denied that he had even given his word to pay a reward. Therefore, Hercules took the matter to court and called the son of Augeas to testify. King Augeas’ offspring testified that his father had indeed agreed to give Hercules a sizeable reward, thus the judge ruled that Hercules would have to be paid. When Hercules arrived and started to track the lion, he soon found it. After a few failed attempts with his bow and arrow, Hercules knew he had to make a new plan. Blocking off one of the two entrances of the cave, he went at the lion grabbing his neck, and with a great struggle he choked the mighty lion to death. Hercules then used the beast's own claw to skin it to bring to the king and make an indestructible armor for himself.

For the ninth labor, Eurystheus ordered Hercules to bring him the belt of Hippolyte, the queen of the Amazons. At first Hippolyte promised to give the belt to Hercules which would have made the labor easy for him, but Hera disguised herself as one of the Amazon warriors and spread false rumors about him. These apples were kept in a garden at the northern edge of the world, and they were guarded  by Ladon, a hundred-headed dragon and by the Hesperides, nymphs who were daughters of Atlas. Hercules didn’t know where the garden was and had many obstacles in order to get there. Hercules captured Nereus the sea-god and got him to tell him the garden's location. Hercules got Atlas to get the apples for him; in exchange he took his place and held up the world on his shoulders. He finished the labor but had to return the apples back to Athena since they belong with the gods and couldn’t stay with Eurystheus.

On the way to find the boar, Hercules stopped to visit his friend, Pholus. Hercules got hungry and his friend cooked meat for him while he ate his meat raw. A little while after, Hercules asked Pholus to open the wine bottle. Pholus refused to open the bottle because it belong to all the Centaurs. Hercules opened the bottle and the rest of the Centaurs smelled the wine. They showed up to Pholus' place very angry and armed with rocks and fir trees. Hercules grabbed sticks from the fireplace and started to throw them at the Centaurs. Pholus ended up getting hit with an arrow in his foot and died on the spot. Hercules buried his friend and continued looking for the boar. He found the huge pig with a bad temper and returned it. From the murky waters of the swamps near a place called Lerna, the Hydra was a monstrous serpent with nine heads, and it attacked with a poisonous venom. Hercules set off to hunt, but he had brought someone along with him: his trusty nephew Iolaus. They arrived to the lair of the Hydra, and Hercules lured the Hydra out by shooting flaming arrows at it. Hercules tried to fight the Hydra, but every time he cut a head two would grow back. Iolaus was able to set a torch on fire, so when Hercules cut a head off Iolaus would burn the stump, thus no be head could grow back. They later returned to King Eurystheus, but he was not impressed because he got help from his nephew Iolaus and the labor was meant for Hercules to be done alone. He was tasked with taking the mares back to Mycenae. Apollodorus spoke of how Hercules joined forces with a band of volunteers. Hercules with the help of his band captured the horses. A few troops were sent to capture the animals back. To free Hercules in battle he gave Abderos the horses. In honor of the slain Abderos, Hercules founded the city of Abdera. The mares wandered around until they came to Mount Olympus, the lofty home of the gods, where they were eaten by wild beasts. In one version, Hercules tames the horses from his own chariot. In the other, he has to bring back the chariot as well as the horses. As a result, Pasiphae gave birth to the Minotaur, a monster with the head of a bull, the body of a man, and eventually imprisoned in the  Labyrinth. This monster kept a herd of red cattle guarded by Orthus, Cerberus’ brother. On his trek to this labor, Hercules split one mountain into two, forming the Pillars of Hercules. After clubbing Orthus, the two-headed hound, to death, Hercules was soon attacked by Geryon, but Hercules shot him dead with arrows and escaped with the cattle.

Therefore, Hercules dared not harm the goddess’ unique pet. After a year and when the doe grew tired of the constant chase, Hercules shot her with an arrow as she was about to cross a stream, put her on his shoulders, and attempted to just scurry away. Soon he was met by Diana and Apollo. The former was about to punish Hercules, but he shared the reason for his action: to satisfy a labor ordered by Eurystheus.
