I take a step forward.
It's not going to work.
I trip on nothing. Empty air.
It is a platform. It is a solid; these are stairs.
I close my eyes. It isn't dark, the hot sun glaring through my eyelids.
There are stairs in front of me. I can and will walk all the way.
Slowly, I extend a foot, putting it down slower than a snail moves.
I think I'm going upwards? I think? It shouldn't be an illusion, right?
I lift my other foot off the ground, wobbling slightly, waving my arms wildly. I don't dare to open my eyes.
I set the next foot down, and it's even higher than the first one.
I gain confidence bit by bit, stumbling, then starting to walk, then running upwards, still with my eyes closed. The wind rushes around me, whistling past my ears.
I open my eyes slowly and look down
I'm in the air, and suddenly I'm falling, but I know this world isn't real, and I can fly. I can fly. I believe in it.
And sure enough, I'm flying, going through buildings, faster than sound, yet seeing everything.
